The organization works with children and yo Read moreung adults with multiple disabilities, however profound they are, their families and the communities they live in. Started in 1985 by the mother of a child with disability, Vidya Sagar is known today for the quality, technical know-how, range of innovative and impactful programs, it’s “professionalism with care” and the pro-active and positive spirit of its team of staff and children. The 37-year-old organization focuses on the holistic development and education of children and adults with special needs, on demystification of disability, empowering persons with special needs and their families with knowledge and skills, while strongly advocating on issues of inclusion in all spheres of life. The organization believes in the right to equality of opportunity, an inclusive society where differences are celebrated, that disability is a development and a human rights issue. Our Programs and target community Family Based Rehabilitation - Students, their families, and the community. Advisory and reference clinic/home management referrals - guidance and training for individuals and their families work in public health centre with babies’ intervention for infants at risk. Early Intervention Program - working with children below 6 years. Outstation Program services for individuals in smaller towns in Tamil Nadu / other states and outside India. Vision Centre - training children with vision and motor difficulties, training professionals. Community Based Rehabilitation - Capacity building of partner organizations in rural, semi urban areas and slum communities implementing community mental health and development programme. Centre for Special Education also serves as resource, research, and demonstration centre. Comprehensive program focusing on therapy, education, and co-curricular activities for children between the ages 6 to 18. Production and Vocational Centre - An attempt to empower adults with disabilities and fulfil their needs and aspirations through the Production and Vocational Centre, The youth program and the Adult Leisure Program. Training and Development – long and short-term courses recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India, with education, therapy, communication, counseling and vision training Disability Legislative Unit - Set up in collaboration with NCPEDP, this unit is run by persons with disabilities Disability Law unit for advocacy BLISS – Independent living projects – Begin to Live Interdependently with Support Systems started in 2018. BLISS will create an ecosystem so that adults with disabilities can have a safe, and proactive support system. We have received three National Awards and the India NGO Award for outstanding services in the field of disability.
