The Lake Gardens Women and Children Development Centre (LGWCDC) functions with its primary aim centred on enhancing the welfare of disadvantaged girls Read more and women residing in impoverished settlements along the railway corridor stretching from Dhakuria to the Lake Gardens station, falling under the jurisdiction of the Indian municipal corporation. LGWCDC envisions a future where women and children, especially girls, have equal access to opportunities and privileges. Its central goal focuses on the holistic progress of marginalized women and children, striving for an improved quality of life through activities such as community development, empowerment, education, healthcare provisions, and the promotion of economic self-reliance. It is committed to upholding a Child Protection Policy and establishing a Committee to combat Workplace Sexual Harassment. In its initial stages, LGWCDC adopted a centre-based, comprehensive strategy that included joyful and remedial educational initiatives to facilitate integration, healthcare services, and vocational skill development for income generation. Its dedication extends to community development and addressing malnutrition, positively impacting an estimated 20,000 beneficiaries to date.

Vocational Training Programme
The Vocational Training Programme encompasses a diverse range of skills, including handicrafts such as stitching, embroidery, cutting, sewing, and fabric painting, as well as massage therapy and beautician courses. Additionally, the programme offers instruction in knitting and skill development in various trades, including office management, mobile and telephone mechanics, diesel mechanics, and electrical pump and generator mechanics.

Women Empowerment Programme
The Women's Empowerment Programme is dedicated to empowering women by nurturing self-help groups, offering essential training and capacity-building initiatives, and enabling income-generating initiatives. Through these efforts, women are equipped with the skills and resources needed to enhance their financial independence and overall well-being.

Education Programmes
Within the realm of Education Programmes, services encompass a creche for children aged six months to six years and remedial classes spanning from Pre-Primary to classes I–IX. The programme extends support through supplementary nutrition and mid-day meals, while also operating community-based creches for young children. Furthermore, it includes the operation of balwadi centres and offers remedial coaching as well as extracurricular activities like singing, dancing, yoga, arts and crafts, and computer education.

Healthcare Programme
The Health Programme involves consistent health check-ups for both women and children. Additionally, it implements a Supplementary Nutrition Programme, providing mid-day meals to pre-primary and class I–III students. Furthermore, it offers nutrition training for both mothers and staff, equipping them with valuable knowledge to promote better health and nutrition practices.

Social Mobilization Programme
Under the banner of Social Mobilization, the initiative focuses on raising awareness regarding crucial aspects such as health and hygiene. It also endeavours to promote awareness of ecological child rights, the Right to Education, and the significance of education itself. These efforts aim to empower communities with knowledge and information, fostering positive change and social awareness on these vital topics.

Mother & Child Course
The Mother and Child Course entails an orientation programme aimed at mothers of newborns and infants aged one to twelve months. This programme educates mothers on addressing the holistic needs of their children, encompassing physical, mental, and social development aspects. Additionally, mothers receive training on effectively nurturing their children during the crucial first 1000 days of life. The training covers topics including health, hygiene, and budget-friendly nutrition strategies, equipping mothers with valuable knowledge for their child's well-being.
