The “anthropause” triggered by the Covid-19 lockdown gave us a chance to start a Gap Year program for our graduating children to help them deepen their Jhamtse roots prior to stepping out into the world. The program is designed to give children an opportunity to learn, reflect and engage with their Jhamtse family and local community to find or hone their potential prior to choosing their career paths.

From a young age, children at Jhamtse Gatsal are taught to honor and respect their cultural and spiritual practices. They
speak in Monpa with their housemothers; they learn Tibetan from Kindergarten; they wear their cultural dresses once a week; they are taught Monpa and Tibetan songs, dances and traditional instruments; and they learn meditation and chanting. By high school, children are taught the monastic debating skills and begin analyzing some of the key Buddhist texts on Mind Training and Compassion.

At Jhamtse Gatsal, sustainable living is how we care for the future. We grow much of our own food through organic farming, seed saving, and simple earth-honoring practices.
We harvest rainwater, recycle what we use, and power our campus with the sun. Even our buildings rise from natural, local materials. Each step moves us toward a self-reliant community that protects the Himalayan land we call home.

Our on-campus clinic addresses the immediate healthcare needs of our community, serving children, adults, and even animals. Additionally, it extends healthcare support to neighboring villages through visiting doctors, dentists, and veterinarians.
Most of our children have suffered from
severe malnutrition prior to joining us. We provide
three healthy and nutritious meals and one snack to
our children every day. Majority of our nutritious
produce is grown in our organic gardens.
