Programs

  • LIVELIHOODS AND FOOD SECURITY

Pragya collaborates with some of the most impoverished communities residing in harsh environments on the fringes of society. These communities, primarily consisting of small and marginal farming households, often grapple with entrenched poverty, persistent food insecurity, and the constant uncertainty associated with subsistence agriculture in unstable climates exacerbated by climate change. They encounter numerous socioeconomic challenges, characterized by limited access to education, skill deficits, and a dearth of employment opportunities, leading to widespread job insecurity and elevated levels of unemployment.

  • NICHE SECTOR LIVELIHOODS

Rural communities across India are confronting unprecedented challenges to their traditional agriculture-based livelihoods, exacerbated by the effects of climate change. Declining soil quality and disruptions to water supplies, particularly pronounced in mountainous areas, pose significant threats to cultivatable land, which is often fragmented due to generational land division and limited access to irrigation. Moreover, geographic isolation and rugged terrain hinder access to regional markets, leading to exploitative supply chains that disadvantage smallholder farmers. Additionally, limited job opportunities in smallholding agriculture contribute to high rates of youth outmigration to urban areas in search of employment, further exacerbating economic challenges in rural regions.
