  • Gramin Mahila Kendra: An Enabling and Safe Space for Women

    State

The establishment of Gramin Mahila Kendras (GMK) by North East Network (NEN) stemmed from a comprehensive study on domestic violence in rural Assam conducted in 2012, which revealed the pervasive yet often unreported nature of gender-based abuse. Following this, NEN trained grassroots women leaders as barefoot counsellors to provide support to survivors and raise awareness in their communities. In subsequent years, GMKs were established in various districts, serving as safe spaces for rural women and recognized by the Women and Child Department, Government of Assam. These centers have provided counseling, referrals to support services, and facilitated the empowerment of survivors and peer leaders, resulting in a significant reduction in violence. Moreover, trained community leaders have expanded their impact by enhancing the capacities of women in their villages, fostering a sustainable network of support and advocacy within local governance structures.
