Key Education Foundation is a Bangalore-based NGO focused on Improving the quality of Early Childhood Education for children from low-income communiti Read morees. It ensures that every child gets the best Early Childhood Education (ECE) before they enter Grade 1. It works with children in the age group of 3-6 years (Pre Primary Education).

Issue

In India, Government services for Early Childhood are focused mainly on health and nutrition, and given the scale and logistics, the education component is deprioritised. Enrollment in these centres is declining. Data reveals that only 32% of 5-year-olds are in Government centres, and 49% of 5 years old in rural India attend Class 1 without any prior exposure to education. This lack of foundational skills leads to weak performance in Primary years and lack of social-emotional skills, which further aggravates a permanent negative disposition towards learning and later manifests into dropouts. Research indicates that part of elementary school’s “learning crisis” happens before children enter Std I. Currently, in India too many children enter formal schooling without exposure to early childhood education and therefore lack readiness for school. When children enter school already “behind” or begin to “fall behind” early, it is hard for them to “catch up” later.

Action

KEF takes a three-pronged approach to ensure the holistic development of children in the age group of 3-6 years in existing pre Primary institutions such as Anganwadis, Government schools and Affordable private schools. It partners with these institutions and delivers its flagship School Readiness Programmes. As part of the School Readiness Programmes, KEF: • Equips schools with age-appropriate, contextual, play-based curriculum teaching-learning materials • Empowers teachers to use Developmentally Appropriate Practices in the classroom • Enables parents with the knowledge and resources to be equal partners in their child’s educational journey
