Embracing the World works to support and help people belonging to marginalised communities living below poverty line and people with disabilities thro Read moreugh its interventions in the areas of health, education, livelihood development, provision of food and shelter. The organisation works towards feeding more than 10 million poor people every year throughout India with an aim to fight hunger. It distributes rice, milk and other uncooked staple food to remote tribal communities alongside free specialised medical services. Further, the organisation constructs houses, community shelters, town halls, roads, infrastructure for provision of electricity, wells, sewage systems and clean drinking water with a special focus on remote poverty stricken areas. The organisation in 1998 established Amrita Institute of Medical Science which conducts free health camps in remote and impoverished areas where all the treatment and medicines are given free of charge. Patients are also screened for serious diseases and referred to AIMS for further treatment when necessary. In 2010 AIMS performed free cataract surgeries for 726 patients and 42 free cleft-palate surgeries for poor patients who were first identified as candidates for treatment in our medical camps. In the area of education, the organisation provides for scholarships to children belonging to marginalised communities, conducts vocational training camps for over 100 skills and after school centres to reduce the school drop out rates. Also, the organisation has established the Amrita Speech And Hearing Improvement School to cater to the needs of children with vocal and hearing impairments. In the area of livelihood development, the organisation provides 100000 economically vulnerable women throughout India with vocational training, start-up capital, marketing assistance, access to micro-credit loans from government-regulated banks and affordable insurance plans with an aim to boost self reliance from home-based businesses. Additionally, since 1998 the organisation provides for monthly pensions for widows and other women in poverty. In 2006 this project was expanded to benefit the physically and mentally challenged and now serves a total of 69,000 beneficiaries.
