Tata Institute of Social Sciences works to support the development of an equitable and sustainable society while ensuring social justice and human rig Read morehts for all. With an aim to achieve its objective the institution organises teaching programmes to facilitate the development of competent professionals for practice, research and training. It also undertakes research, develops and disseminates knowledge while reaching out to larger community through its engagement at local, national and international level. Also, it supports knowledge creation through strong M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes. The institution conducts field action and advocacy to demonstrate and facilitate creation of policies and programmes. Further, all professionals involved with the institution, participate in various relief and rehabilitation programmes with an aim to respond to natural and man-made disasters. Additionally, as a part of its people-centered interactions, the institution has established a special cell for women and children in seven states to counter the issues related to violence against women and children. Further, it also receives global funds to conduct a country-wide project for building capacity to counter diseases such as AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The project 'Saksham' conducts master training programmes and helps to build infrastructure to develop the capacities of 40 academic institutions all over the country, which, in turn, aim to provide supportive supervision and training to 12,000 counsellors working in the national HIV/AIDS counselling programme. Further, in collaboration with Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration, TISS is in the process of setting up Disaster Early Warning System and structures for Rural Knowledge Centres. Also, it has established the Himalayan Universities Consortium of 25 universities from the sub-continent, Afghanistan and China for teaching and research on mountain development and climate change. In addition to this, the institution conducts critical research in diverse areas such as education and literacy, family and children, social issues, rural and urban development issues, displacement, youth and human development, and the rights of Dalits, indigenous peoples, minorities and other marginalised groups.

  • Criminal Justice Fellowship Programme (2015-2019)

    The institution champions unconventional paths and supports marginalized communities through fellowships, including joint initiatives with NGOs. These initiatives, spanning education, health, and gender, nurture talent, foster indigenous knowledge, and inspire social change. The Criminal Justice Fellowship program, initiated in April 2015, addresses various issues within the criminal justice system across India. Its objective is to encourage innovative work and highlight critical issues, ranging from prison populations to victims' rights and prevention of crime.
