Water Sanitation and Hygiene Institute(WASH) Institute carries out research and field studies to promote innovative and low-cost solutions for access Read moreand management of clean drinking water and sewage disposal. WASH Institute has been identified as a national key resource centre by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation. It has been providing technical support for the effective implementation of pilot programmes under the Swachh Bharat Mission. WASH Institute provides training to professionals such as Government engineers, school teachers, Anganwadi workers and social workers working in this field. It also provides training to masons for building quality toilets. The institute spreads awareness among communities, especially among children about sustainable solutions for proper management of water resources and sanitation facilities. The WASH Institute offers certificate and post-graduate courses such as Environmental Sanitation Science and Sanitary Inspector in collaboration with Madurai Kamaraj University in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.


Issue

Awareness of water management and sanitation facilities is not widespread leading to bad hygiene practices and mismanagement of resources, especially in rural regions.


Action

The WASH Institute through its experience conducts research and studies into the best water management and sanitation practices, advises and provides consultation to Government agencies on sanitation and hygiene projects of national importance and also skills and trains individuals and communities on construction and optimum use of sanitation facilities.

Programs

  • Research & Development

    The WASH Institute undertakes research and development projects to study various facets of water management and sanitation.

    It is studying methods of using dry faecal sludge as an alternative fuel, developing Sunidhi toilets in public places affording safety and security to women and adolescent girls, mapping best sanitation practices across India and studying the introduction of innovative hygiene and sanitation practices in schools.

  • Grassroots Programmes

    These programmes promote the establishment of Swachh villages and schools across the states of India.

    It intends to inform and create awareness of hygiene and the importance of maintaining it. The programme includes the construction of toilets in Government schools, sensitizing school students on the use of sanitation facilities and taking up activities to generate positive behaviour towards the usage of sanitation facilities.

  • Technical Assistance

    The Institute offers technical assistance to ministries and projects undertaken by the Government of India in the context of the Swachh Bharat Mission and Jal Shakti Abhiyan, it is also developing methods of quality assurance for the implementation and monitoring of FSTP solutions.

  • Training & Capacity Building Programmes

    WASH Institute is conducting training and capacity-building programmes in various cities across India to improve the skills of individuals and communities.

    Its sessions and skilling include training of development in faecal sludge and septage management, training masons in construction of rural household toilets, training NGOs on rural water supply and management, orientation and training on usage of ECOSAN toilets and training Government engineers and officials on rural water supply and sanitation.
