About

  • Headquarters

    Villupuram District, Tamil Nadu

  • Since

    1997

With an emphasis on impoverished young widows, the homeless, physically challenged adolescents, underprivileged children, marginalized agricultural la Read morebourers, women living with HIV/AIDS, and TB-infected and impacted women, SWEET aims to enhance the lives of women and children. The mission of SWEET is to improve the lives of marginalized and small-scale farmers, agricultural labourers, women, disabled people, dropouts, and other impoverished rural groups. The cornerstone of our work is "Empower the Powerless," and the main goal of SWEET is to advance human rights via social, cultural, and economic development projects in which the poorest tribal and Dalit people actively participate.

Programs

  • Income Generation Programme (IGP)

The USA's Right Sharing of World Resources (RSWR) has provided assistance to underprivileged young widows from Irula and Dalit groups as well as women coping with HIV/AIDS. Through this project, SWEET has assisted poor young widows of Irulas and Dalit communities, women living with HIV/AIDS, and destitute women in starting their own businesses such as vegetable shops, rice flour mills, tailoring, small shops, and flower stands.

  • Education Programmes

One of SWEET's primary goals is to provide intellectual and social skills. Currently, we are operating three tuition centres in three of Mailam Block's villages. Five volunteers who have received training in child management, excellent teaching techniques, and communication skills are currently employed as teachers. Through the tuition institutes, 90 underprivileged children from Dalit and tribal communities are benefited. Our interactions with the development of rural youngsters begin at the tuition centres. Local donations from SWEET friends and well-wishers have kept all the locations operational.

  • Water & Sanitation

For women, children, and youth, water and sanitation orientations and training have been planned. Because of the water scarcity issue, our district is rapidly turning into a drought area. As a result, awareness campaigns have emphasized the significance of managing water resources and using water only when necessary. The need to drink boiled water to stop the spread of water-borne diseases was also covered in the training. The younger children benefit greatly from these lessons in terms of changing their perspective on the WASH idea.

  • Healthcare Programme

Society for Women Education and Economic Thrust (SWEET) is actively involved in health initiatives, particularly focusing on HIV/AIDS and TB interventions. Recognizing the alarming prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Tamilnadu, where it ranks among the top three countries affected, SWEET conducts awareness programs targeting various groups, including Self-Help Groups, youth, young women, and Female Sex workers. Led by experts like Dr. TJ. Jaishankar and Dr. Amalraj, these programmes cover topics such as reproductive health, sexually transmitted infections, and hygiene practices to combat HIV/AIDS. SWEET emphasizes community involvement to reduce stigma and encourages women and youth to spread awareness. Additionally, the organisation educates rural communities on TB prevention, conducting educational programs to disseminate scientific knowledge and preventive measures. Through collaboration with other NGOs, SWEET amplifies its impact in combating these health challenges.

  • Animal Welfare Programme

Society for Women Education and Economic Thrust (SWEET) partnered with Government Veterinary Hospitals to conduct 22 medical camps aimed at promoting animal welfare. These camps provided essential services such as vaccinations, fertilization, and treatment for various diseases to cattle, including cows, bullocks, goats, hens, and cats. The initiative directly benefited over 3000 families by improving the health and well-being of their livestock.
