The concept of GARV toilets was conceived to address the persistent challenges in public and community toilets in developing regions. The organisation Read more recognized that many public and community toilet facilities in low-income communities, constructed with traditional brick-and-mortar structures and ceramic fittings, faced ongoing issues such as frequent vandalism, irregular maintenance, high operational costs, and a lack of basic amenities like water, electricity, and proper ventilation. Despite substantial investments in new construction and renovations, the impact was often limited. To tackle these problems, it developed a toilet design that is exceptionally durable, incorporates cutting-edge technology (RFID-IoT), and is self-sustainable in terms of energy use, waste management, and revenue generation. The toilet blocks feature solar power, LED lighting, effective ventilation through exhaust fans, sanitary pad vending machines, ramp access, disability-friendly toilets with handrails, overhead water tanks, bore wells, and wastewater recycling systems to ensure that all fundamental toilet requirements are met. It has implemented a proven operational model based on prefabricated public toilets. By integrating smart technology features (RFID-IoT devices), project implementing agencies receive real-time updates on toilet usage and user hygiene behaviour. This approach significantly reduces operating costs by minimizing turnaround times for maintenance activities. These combined efforts ensure that communities have 24/7 access to clean, well-maintained toilets, government partners stay informed about usage patterns and user behaviour, and implementing partners optimize their operational expenses.

Smart toilets
GARV tackles the core challenges of vandalism and inadequate maintenance that often plague public toilets. The organisation accomplishes this by employing top-quality materials in the construction of the toilets and integrating innovative software and sensor-based solutions to monitor and trigger maintenance actions.
The organisation offers kid-friendly toilets for boys and girls, toilets with sanitary pad vending machines and incinerators, and galvanized steel toilets for communities. In locations where continuous power supply is unavailable, these toilets use solar power with battery backup.
