Karunar Kheti Trust, translating to "Cultivation of Trust" in Assamese, commenced in 2019 to foster the development of the rural community associated Read morewith the tea plantations in and around Selenghat, Assam. Its inaugural project established the Selenghat Valley School through collaborative efforts between the organisation and the rural community. This initiative aimed to provide quality education to the children of tea estate workers. Presently, the school accommodates 80 students across Nursery, LKG, and UKG. The Trust intends to progressively add grades annually and is actively engaging with the State Government's education department for school recognition. Amid the pandemic-induced school closures, the Trust initiated online classes via a YouTube channel and distributed educational materials to students. Collaborating with parents, they also equipped them to facilitate home-based learning. Operating a student resource centre, the Trust supports children who discontinued their education after the tenth and twelfth grades due to a lack of secondary education infrastructure. Remedial classes are provided to bridge their educational gaps. Empowering women, the Trust organised teams and conducted tailoring training to meet the demand for face masks. These skilled women now contribute to the community by sewing and stitching, generating supplemental income for their households. Additionally, the Trust undertook initiatives promoting mushroom cultivation and the creation of organic pesticides, aimed at bolstering household income.
