Project Unlearn aims to rid society from crime against women and establish a gender equal community. It works to break the cycle of gender based vi Read moreolence by trying to repair the social training that has been in place for generations and therefore finds it important to deal with these critical issues by taking at-risk youth on a path that paves the way to a much-needed discussion to help young men understand how their behaviour and roles spread violence on women. It is active in conducting workshops in disadvantaged and high risk localities where youth are involved and explained the ills of committing violence against women. The sessions are tailored and customised to prevent youth and intervene before the crime occurs. It also conducts workshops, sessions and discussions with youth and men locked up in prisons for crimes of violence against women. It follows the path of informing and initiating conversation with these youth and men to bring out the human in them and rehabilitate them into better citizens. It has developed a toolkit “Pehal” which aims to correct the wrong views of inmates jailed for crimes against women. The kit consists of games which introduces and educates them as to the duties of a good citizen, It contains a kit of cards “Patte pe charcha” which can be played and each card has a useful tip to become a good citizen and follow human rights which provides a space for discussions and deliberations. The kit also features a boardgame known as “Soch” and guides the player to the concept of consent, A set of comics called “Nazariya” conveying real stories of domestic violence, sexual harassment and dowry crimes that can initiate discussion and stimulate the thinking process to prevent such activities, An alphabet chart known as “Buniyaad” which uses examples that learners can relate to and help them recognize the Hindi alphabet with appropriate examples. The organisation also provides an unlearn fellowship where interested volunteers are selected and paired with peers who are ex-convicts who have been involved in crimes against women. The objective of this exercise it to spread the concept of gender equality and reduce gender based violence in society. The fellowship features training and learning sessions of 6 months followed by a 2 month partial on the ground activity to assess impact. The candidates and peers are paid stipends for a 6 month period and are awarded certificates to recognise their contributions.
