  • Since

    2016

We never see rural communities as poor and deprived populations in need of our help. In fact, it is just the opposite. They are rich centres of tradit Read moreional wisdom and cultural heritage that ought to be promoted and preserved. Ultimately, it is only when these communities and the environment around them flourish, that our existence will have meaning. It is with this mindset that the Geeli Mitti Foundation was set up, to cater to the constantly evolving needs of rural and urban communities, helping them improve their quality of life, acquire new skills and convert their strengths into opportunities for livelihood and economic well-being. Our Research Hub in the Naina Devi Bird Conservation Zone in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand is an experimental ground for innovations in ecological housing, waste management, and water systems. The best practices developed here are replicated across the country with the help of volunteers and partner organisations. The community centre will benefit 4000 people in 3 villages directly. The community centre will improve the employability of the local youth and also be the first aid centre for the 3 villages. The centre will also enable additional income to be generated for the women of the villages and serve as a library.

Programs

  • Skill Development

Through our skill-training programmes, women and youth can learn new skills that will improve their earning potential and standard of living.

Training in Skills: To encourage the creation of handicrafts in the area, we offer direction and instruction in crafts like crocheting, knitting, dreamcatchers, and Ringal crafts, as well as help with their sale in city markets. In addition, we bought sewing machines and taught people in the area how to upcycle old fabric into carry bags.

Computer Centre: To establish a computer training centre, we have partnered with the Art of Living Foundation. To enable women and youth to perform daily tasks including online banking, ticket booking, university applications, government programme applications, and submitting complaints and grievances with the local government, the centre government certifies computer courses in addition to providing basic training.

  • Community Tourism

The unprecedently rapid rise of a run-down concrete jungle in Uttarakhand as a tourist destination has led to an increasing trash problem and an excessive demand for water and other valuable natural resources. A novel and sustainable tourist concept that can protect the fragile hillscape environment and benefit the community as a whole is desperately needed.
