Vision & Mission

Khaana Chahiye Foundation is an ‘Impact organization’ working towards SDG-2 'Zero Hunger', in the Mumbai metropolitan region. We are a citizens movement that has its origins in crowdfunded and volunteer-driven relief operations, through cooked meals and grocery kits, during the lockdown due to the covid pandemic.

We've been able to distribute 71,00,000 (71 lakh) cooked meals, 71,000 family grocery kits and support over 6 lakh migrant workers with food and essentials by adopting CST, Bandra and Kurla train terminuses in Mumbai.

We presently support 2 community kitchens in Ulhasnagar, by a transgender collective and in Kurla by a women's self help group. In addition to this, we still continue to support SOS request through our report hunger feature via our WhatsApp chatbot, in partnership with WhatsApp.

We have now transitioned into a registered not-for-profit company, working on data-driven, community-led and policy-oriented long-term solutions for urban hunger. We are in the process of creating Mumbai's hunger map- using smart technology, for better visualization, engagement and data-driven policy intervention by local governments.

Programs

  • Sos Grocery Operation

During the first lockdown, to tackle the data gap, Khaana Chahiye used online forms to track and report hunger across the various clusters in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. This mechanism allowed volunteers, citizens, nonprofit organizations, and other community stakeholders, such as Teach For India fellows, to report hunger in their localities and neighboring areas. It also ensured that Khaana Chahiye optimized their operations based on the needs of communities. In 2021, Khaana Chahiye upgraded this mechanism to a multilingual WhatsApp bot in partnership with WhatsApp and Gupshup that collected information in English, Marathi, and Hindi, so that anyone in Mumbai could register or report families or individuals in need to make the service accessible to a larger audience. The Report Hunger service is available on +91-7669800470 as a WhatsApp helpline as well as on our website. Anyone can report a family, individual or community in distress. Once we receive the request, it’s verified by our team. A call is made to the registered phone number to confirm the details. For bulk requests, our volunteer on the ground visits the community to assess the situation on the ground. Institutional Partnerships We have partnerships with TISS, CSSC who work with vulnerable communities in Govandi and Mumbai’s Western suburbs, to identify those in extreme need, for SOS grocery support. We are expanding this alliance with 3 more partners
