Volunteer for India aims to uplift the underprivileged population and solve pertinent social issues affecting the city through structured volunteering Read more programs. Our aim is to enable every Indian to volunteer for social betterment. The organization, co-founded by Gautham Ravindran and Ramalingam Natarajan, is registered as a non-profit organization (under the Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act, 1955) as Society for Promotion of Volunteerism, with the vision of promoting volunteerism as a national value.
Issue
Equal education, menstrual hygiene awareness, basic sanitation, healthcare, women safety, infrastructure, LGBTQIA+ equality, waste management, disaster management, prevention of child marriages, prevention of child sexual abuse, and drug de-addiction. What do all these social causes have in common? The common answer is strong and passionate volunteer leaders who are focused on the betterment of society through their work on social causes. According to a report from the ministry of statistics, only 1.5% of India’s population volunteers for some activity or the other. One of the key findings of the survey was that interested individuals had the urge to be socially responsible but they do not know the avenues to look for volunteering opportunities. To overcome this deficit, there is the requirement for a PLATFORM that enables and mentors these interested individuals to become volunteer leaders.
Action
Volunteer for India (Society for Promotion of Volunteerism), strives to uplift marginalized communities and tackle prevalent social issues on a national scale through coordinated volunteer efforts. Its primary objective is to promote a culture of volunteerism among Indians, encouraging a sense of service for the collective welfare. The initiative empowers individuals to realize their potential as volunteers and lead volunteer-driven initiatives. By involving communities and fostering partnerships among various stakeholders such as NGOs, government entities, businesses, and volunteers, the organization aims to amplify the impact of volunteerism. Through structured volunteer programs, the organizaton seeks to address urgent social challenges and promote inclusive development throughout the nation. With the vision of ingraining volunteerism as a fundamental national ethos, the Society for Promotion of Volunteerism endeavors to mobilize a nationwide movement characterized by inclusiveness and societal accountability.

Through its flagship initiative, the Volship Fellowship, VFI has recruited 571 fellows and leaders, who have driven meaningful change at the grassroots level. This passionate group of leaders has mobilized over 32,209 volunteers across India, collectively dedicating 273,342 hours towards impactful causes. The numbers reflect VFI’s remarkable reach, but the real stories bring its impact to life. From environmental clean-ups on India’s coastlines to educational initiatives for underprivileged children, and awareness campaigns on health and nutrition, VFI’s efforts have reached diverse communities. In Chennai, VFI fellows organized a beach cleanup that not only cleared hundreds of kilograms of waste but inspired local residents to take regular action for cleaner shores. In rural Maharashtra, a fellow launched health camps and awareness sessions on anemia, benefiting hundreds of young women with critical health information. Each story reflects the ripple effect VFI has created—empowering volunteers, uplifting communities, and inspiring countless people to contribute toward a more inclusive, compassionate India. Volunteer for India continues to build a stronger ecosystem for volunteerism, showing that every hour, every volunteer, and every initiative has the power to transform lives and drive sustainable change.
