    2013

Forest First Samithi aims to involve and empower communities in sustainable ecological conservation efforts by equipping them with knowledge and resou Read morerces. Its mission revolves around establishing conservation plots for over 100 Rare, Endangered, Threatened (RET) trees of Western Ghats with community engagement, fostering awareness about biodiversity conservation, and providing continuous support for such initiatives. The organisation values collaboration and co-creation with similar-minded communities and organisations, aiming to create tangible conservation models at the grassroots level. Its activities focus on biologically important elements such as species that attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, wild edible fruits, riverine species, RET tree species, and medicinal/utility species. It works across various landscapes, including degraded lands for invasive species eradication, enriching coffee estates to reduce dependence on exotic species, enhancing riparian buffers, and creating medicinal and butterfly gardens. Forest First Samithi achieves this by identifying committed individuals, communities, schools, and temples for ex-situ conservation spaces, engaging the community in nature interpretation and learning centres, planting and nurturing tree saplings for a minimum of three years, tagging species for scientific and local documentation, creating local employment, and fostering community awareness about ecological conservation.

Issue

The invasion of alien species like Lantana camara and Senna spectabilis are suppressing native biodiversity and in turn threatening the livelihoods of these tribal communities. Rapidly reduced biodiversity in the Western Ghats and loss of grass is reducing fodder for angulates. This is one major cause of increase in human-animal conflicts in the region.

Action

a) Scientific uprooting of invasive Senna spectabilis. b) Assisted Natural regeneration of removal of Lantana camera strangulation on naturally regenerated saplings c) Nursery management of native/ Rare, Endangered and Threatened species. d) Planting native/RET saplings

Impact

Forest First Samiti's impactful initiatives include planting 40,000 saplings, developing 11 small check dams, freeing 17,000 saplings from invasive Lantana, nurturing 4 nurseries housing 80 species, clearing 133 acres of invasive Senna, supporting 48 restorers, and dedicating efforts to restoring 326 acres of forest land, engaging 20,600 person-days, and collaborating with 4 indigenous tribes.

Programs

  • Restoration Programme

The programme aims to restore 426 acres across various landscapes: rejuvenating degraded lands in the Western Ghats affected by invasive species, planting diverse flora in forests invaded by Lantana, conserving ecologically vital riverine areas, diversifying coffee estates dominated by exotic species, conserving sacred groves with over native species, and stabilizing landslide-prone lands using native grasses. This includes planting species such as wild edible fruits, riverine species, rare, endangered and threatened trees, and medicinal plants, fostering biodiversity while reducing soil erosion, enhancing habitat diversity, improving pollination, and ensuring soil stabilization across private lands, estates, sacred groves, and degraded areas, promoting sustainable ecological balance.
