Issue

Women’s labour force participation in India is one of the lowest in the world. Women comprise half of the Indian population but make up less than a quarter of its force. This absence from the workforce creates a cycle of inequalities women fight every day. Young girls dropout of school at alarming rates, and are subsequently denied growth in a space that is dedicated solely to women, their progress and growth. Indian women are arguably one of the largest pools of untapped potential. We believe that economic empowerment and independence are key factors in creating social change.

Action

Calcutta Foundation recognizes the fundamental inequalities faced by women in Indian society, where limited choices, lack of agency, and restricted aspirations prevail. To address these inequalities, Calcutta Foundation adopts a comprehensive approach focused on achieving gender equality in work, essential services, legal protection, political voice, and physical security. Its philosophy emphasizes empowering women to attain financial independence, with a vision of a world where women have equal economic opportunities and can make their own decisions. Through training, skill development, and community engagement, the foundation seeks to establish centres offering vocational training, financial literacy, and mentorship, creating a supportive environment for women to realize their potential and take control of their lives.
