Theory of Change

Founded in 1983, GRAVIS has grown into one of the most respected NGOs in India with a strong international recognition. The organization was started by a small group of development activists who believed in participatory rural development, with very little resources but with a very strong commitment. GRAVIS began its work in about 20 villages and currently works in over 1,600 villages in Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh.
The Gandhian philosophy of Sarvodaya—all rising, but the last person first—is the basis of GRAVIS' strategy and approach. We work for the collective rise of men, women, and children, regardless of economic state, age, caste or religion. This philosophy is becoming increasingly pertinent as India's social incongruities widen the gap between rich and poor making the country’s shift into the modern age a bittersweet phenomenon.
