    1988

Vathsalya Charitable Trust (VCT), was started in 1988 in Bangalore, Karnataka as a welfare, child care and adoption center for homeless and orphaned c Read morehildren. A few years ago, VCT made a full transition to focusing on child development and building stability within the family as a unit. Hepzibah Sharmila, Executive Director of Vathsalya, is a social worker by calling and by profession. Backed with a Master’s Degree in Social Work and over 20 years of experience, she uses evidence-based approaches to design effective programs to help build up communities. She leads the entire Vathsalya team in designing, implementing and assessing programs that meet the relevant needs of the community. Vathsalya, meaning 'A Mother's Love, has 3 main verticals through which it operates: Child Development Wing - Conducts informal education for 1-7 year old children hailing from underprivileged migrant families. The program includes nutrition education, social skill training, music, drama and arts. Child Nutrition Project - Delivers interventions in nutrition education, early childhood feeding and growth screening. Our team also engages Peer Nutrition Educators to provide the children in their community high protein porridge and eggs every day. Parents are taught to grow microgreens as a cheap and quick source of nutrition for the family. They see firsthand, over time, the benefits of choosing healthy food over refined snacks and junk food. Education Sponsorship - Sponsors the education of older socio-economically disadvantaged children already in the school system. The Program finances their education till the 10th grade and conducts value-based training. Income Generation Program - Has two initiatives. Skill Training trains migrant mothers in making jute, cloth and newspaper products, including face masks, bags and cushion covers and planters. Capital Assistance provides interest-free loans and business counselling for mothers who have small businesses and desire to invest and scale-up. Every action taken is rooted and founded in love. Your sponsorship will help create a stable foundation for a child, one that paves the way for a life of success and fulfillment.
