A group of youngsters formed a small club to express their youthful energy through organising cultural events and celebrating Saraswati Pujas. This sm Read moreall and non-descript club, over the years, grew into a community organisation called “Amara Sabai” meaning we all. Through the firm determination, and sheer hard work of the group of young persons, “Amara Sabai” gradually gained the confidence of the community people and turned into a truly people’s Organisation. Having been registered in the year 1977 under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act, the organisation has developed into a multifaceted development Agency engaged in essential community service activities for the people of Sundarbans. We work for the marginalised section of our society. We are running a school in this remote area of Sundarbans, West Bengal.

Theory of Change
The organisation is purely community-based and works mainly with community resources with the help of community members. All the members are from the local community and work as volunteer to be the development partners. We are focused exclusively on our locality, especially the two blocks of the Sundarbans. As we work for our locality, which is a highly remote area of the world, namely the Sundarbans, with a scarcity of skilled and technical personnel, and as we are purely volunteers and running on a limited budget, we are unable to follow the corporate-type administrative system.
As a result, our theory of change is founded on real-world experience. For example, we began the education programme a long time ago, and we then organised a number of non-formal education centres, adult education centres, childhood education centres, and so on. Our volunteers used to go door to door to enrol people in the literacy programme and teach them. In response to changing circumstances, we gradually transitioned to formal education for children from disadvantaged communities, establishing eight education centres throughout the region. All of the centres are now working together to run a single education centre that will provide quality education to the children of the area's poor and disadvantaged residents.
Similarly, we have made changes to our agricultural activities for local peasants, our health care programme, our mother and child care programme, immunization programme and so on, in response to changes in the area, such as changes in the environment and social system, communication, technological innovation, and so on. However, no written charts or documents were created for this purpose.
