Kolkata Anandam for Equality and Justice (KAEJ) is a grassroots LGBTQKH organisation in Kolkata that focuses on advocating for social and political ch Read moreange to improve the rights, dignity, and quality of life of LGBTQKH individuals. Operating from an anti-violence perspective, KAEJ recognizes the multi-dimensional nature of violence, encompassing economic, physical, sexual, emotional, social, and state-related aspects. The organisation is dedicated to upholding human rights for all, particularly the most marginalized members of the LGBTQKH community. KAEJ's efforts extend to red-light districts across urban and rural West Bengal, where many low-income individuals, including transgendered people, face economic challenges due to discrimination based on gender presentation and sexuality. The criminalization of both sex work and LGBTQKH identities in India further compounds their struggles with homophobia, transphobia, social abuse, and poverty. Through awareness campaigns, institutional training programmes, advocacy, and community-building initiatives, KAEJ aims to foster a more inclusive and accepting social and political environment for queer individuals in India. While acknowledging its origin as the Balaram Dey Street Anandam (BDSA), a segment of a sex-worker collective in Sonagachi Kolkata, KAEJ has evolved independently due to institutional transphobia within BDSA. The organisation preserves its historical connection with BDSA but operates autonomously as Kolkata Anandam for Equality and Justice, emphasizing its commitment to heritage, dignity, and self-sufficiency in the pursuit of equality and justice.

Until & Unless Film Project
Set in West Bengal a year before the repeal of India's anti-sodomy law, Penal Code 377, the documentary "Until and Unless" portrays the experiences of four individuals affected by systemic oppression within India's legislative system. The film features Sintu, a transwoman community leader from the Sheoraphuli red-light district; Nitu, a transwoman sex worker who lives a dual identity; Lovely, a Koti person concealing their identity while working in an office; and Pratap, a trans teen navigating identity issues. By juxtaposing their stories with insights from lawyers and activists opposing these laws, the documentary underscores the practical impact of state and social violence on community self-representation.
