Issue
India has the highest number of stray dogs globally, estimated at 60 million. Every 30 minutes, one person dies of rabies, with 95% of cases stemming from dog bites, and 40% affecting underprivileged children. There is a lack of education on safe interaction with stray dogs, as children are often taught to throw rocks and run – a counterproductive approach to avoiding bites. Veterinary care is insufficient in rural regions. The government lacks focus and does not provide funding to address the problem, resulting in the ongoing human-stray dog conflict. Giving to charities is still not the norm in India The conflict results in an uncountable number of dogs left to endure disease, injuries, cancer, fractures from accidents, abuse, apathy, and neglect each year.
Action
We have helped over 23,000 animals as of August 2024 Our vision: No More Homeless Dogs We provide a holistic approach: ABC (Animal Birth Control) - India has the most stray dogs in the world at an estimated 62 million. This program is a systematic approach to stabilize the street dog population humanely. We use the ICAM (International Campaign Animal Management coalition) protocols as guidance. Goal: 1200 sterilizations Rabies Eradication - Rabies is a neglected zoonotic disease per the World Health Organization, with India having the highest incidence of human deaths by rabies in the world at 1 death every 30 minutes, 95% of the time caused by a dog bite, and most victims are impoverished children. We run an annual mass rabies vaccination and awareness program each year to tackle the issue. Goal: 3000 Street Animal Rescue – This program provides an optimal environment for any small animal needing 24/7 care due to accidents, disease, cruelty, or abandonment. Goal/Capacity: 500 annually Humane Education and Community Outreach – We launched 2 new programs in 2024: Karuna Rural Village Program, The goal of this program is to create safe and compassionate villages. Many rural villages in India have beliefs that are outdated and are potentially causing more harm than good when it comes to their interactions with stray/community dogs. Our goal is to create a cycle of benefit for both the villages/villagers and the dogs that reside there. Our first step is to hold meetings and sessions with women’s groups and children within each village. These sessions will not only be a way to educate on rabies/bite safety and compassion, but be a discovery session for us to learn what issues the people are facing and how we can solve them peacefully. Goal. 1000 people attend programs. Brake for Stray Mural Program. Hit and runs continue to be the deadliest and most frequent need for rescue. This program aims to decrease hit and run through murals placed on the deadliest spaces of road. Goal 6 murals. Adoption – We encourage local adoption but all potential families must go through an application process, approval, and follow up. It is an area in need of huge change.
