Since
2005
In July 2005, Gujarat experienced devastating rains and floods. During this period, a group of doctors and social workers visited remote interior vill Read moreages, specifically Mahudha and Nadiad taluka in the Kheda District. Their intention was to distribute food grains and offer medical treatment. However, upon arrival, they were confronted with a shocking and distressing scene. The condition was dire, with thousands of impoverished and uneducated villagers grappling with skin diseases, respiratory ailments, gastrointestinal issues, and infectious diseases in dire and helpless circumstances. Although the government was making considerable efforts to provide financial assistance and enhance infrastructure amenities like roads, electricity, food supply, and communication in remote regions, the sheer scale of the health needs among millions of villagers proved to be a monumental challenge. Delivering primary health services emerged as a formidable task, as it necessitated not only the provision of medicines but also the presence of qualified health professionals, specifically doctors. In response to this situation, a group of three doctors and eight workers united with a strong sense of purpose, forming a team under the banner of the Sanjivani Health and Relief Committee (SHRC). To address the pressing medical needs, they initiated weekly camps every Sunday. Within just three months, their team expanded from three doctors to ten, and the worker count increased from eight to sixteen. These efforts enabled them to provide free medical treatment to more than 10,000 patients. Recognizing the need for ongoing care, Sanjivani established follow-up camps in these villages on a prearranged schedule, in collaboration with health and revenue authorities of the district. This modest beginning gradually gained momentum, and today Sanjivani takes pride in its status as an NGO comprising 20 senior qualified medical practitioners, 3 eye surgeons, 10 dental surgeons, 30 ophthalmic assistants, lab technicians, and over 50 dedicated volunteers. The organization is committed to delivering medical services and free medicines to underserved villagers, right at their doorstep.
