Kalyan Sangha was born in Haripal of Hooghly district, West Bengal during early 20th century . Social worker and renowned doctor during 1920s, son of Read morethe soil, Dr. Ashutosh Das came back to his native place after leaving government service. His aim was to serve the village and develop a village community following Mahatma Gandhi’s ideology. The organization that he formed was named Kalyan Sangha. Two other people, Sri Satish Chandra Sengupta and Sri Bijoy Kumar Bhattacharya came forward to help Dr. Das. At that time, it was a shelter for the sick and wounded freedom fighters. Later, in 1927 Kalyan Sangha shifted base to Chandra village of Bankura district. When the nation was experiencing freedom struggle, Kalyan Sangha emerged as an Ashram on the lap of the beautiful Shushunia Hill, under the guidance of Sri Bijoy Kumar Bhattacharya and Sri Prafulla Chandra Sen. The local zamindar gave away six bighas of land for the establishment of the Ashram. This place became a branch of the Kalyan Sangha of Hooghly. Freedom fighter Sri Sanat Kumar Bhattacharya and his co-worker Kalidas Banerjee took charge of this branch. Chandra was a TNaad (arid) region devoid of any school, doctor or shops. The area was gradually transformed into fertile cultivable land; a small school wasstarted; the local village people started to take interest in the project. In 1970, a children school, Sanat Kumar Shishu Bidyalaya was established at Kalyan Sangha, with the help of Bijoy Kumar and Smt. Sadhana Bhattacharya. A seven-member committee was formed where Bijoy Kumar was named the president and Sadhana Bhattacharya became the secretary. Since the social welfare department asked to register the organization to avail their fund, Kalyan Sangha became a registered body in 1971. The Registration No. was S/10764 of1970-71. Sri Bijoy Kumar Bhattacharya, Smt. Sadhana Bhattacharya and the next president Sri Ramlochan Mukhopadhyay protected the organization in many hard times that Kalyan Sangha faced. After their death, this organization is still working towards its goal of maintaining its community ties, educating and rearing children. The blessings of the people who took care of the organization previously and the love and encouragement of the people of the local village are the two most precious resources of KalyanSangha. Kalyan Sangha is not a religious or political organization and has no such affiliation.

Programs

  • SHISHU LALONEE (CRÈCHE)

Shishu Lalonee looks after the children of working mothers in three to four rooms at Kalyan Sangha. Nearly every member of these children's families works. The older children are unable to attend school, even if the younger ones are left at home with them. They are also unable to adequately care for the younger ones. Two teachers are in charge of the kids at the ShishuLalonee. The Shishu Lalonee project is funded by the Social Welfare Department. Lalonee's child population is primarily made up of Aboriginal families. The kids spend eight hours a day at Lalonee and four hours a day at home. Lalonee looks after the children's washing and eating needs, tries to instil good hygiene standards in them, offers a variety of educational programmes, and provides medical care as needed. The parents merely give a small payment to serve as a reminder that raising a child is also the responsibility of parents.

  • SANAT KUMAR PRE-PRIMARY SCHOOL

This school was founded entirely by Kalyan Sangha's organisational ability. The school day begins at 10:00 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. This school can accommodate fifty students. The majority of the kids are from working homes or families with no one who has ever gone to school. A few kids from the Shishu Lalonee creche also come to this school. The Bhagawati Charitable Trust contributes financially to the operation of this school, mostly for the cost of the required medical care and the daily meals. This school aims to create a comprehensive learning environment using music, poetry, art, educational play activities, and other means rather than limiting instruction to the traditional book-oriented system.
