Diya Ghar (www.diyaghar.org) provides Early Childhood Care and Education for children of migrant labourers. There are over 4 lakh preschool age childr Read moreen in Bangalore without access to education, nutrition or medical care. Their parents work in construction sites, garbage segregation centres, as vendors at bus stations and as door-to-door knife sharpeners. Many of these families also resort to begging for a living. Some children accompany their parents to work, while others are left in their tents unattended. There are no Government run preschools close to these communities and these children suffer neglect, abuse and lack nutritious food during their critical years of development. Diya Ghar sets up Centres near Migrant communities and runs a full day preschool and day care for children between the ages of 1.5 – 6 years from 9 am - 4:30 pm. We provide nutrition (porridge, lunch, egg, fruits and protein bars), preschool education using Montessori method, childcare and health care. We also run an Afterschool program (4:30 – 6:30pm) for our alumni and older children in the community. Diya Ghar started with 5 children in 2016 and currently serves 1,250 children across 20 Centres in Bangalore. 601 children (first generational learners) have graduated from our preschools and enrolled in Primary Schools. Our next milestone is to reach 5,000 children everyday. A short video on our Journey from 2016: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLTk9UncFFA

Issue

There are an estimated 4,00,000 preschool age children in Bangalore without access to education, nutrition and medical care. Their parents work in construction sites, garbage segregation centres, as vendors at bus stations and as door-to-door knife sharpeners. Many of these families also resort to begging for a living. Action

Diya Ghar provides preschool education using Montessori method, nutrition (porridge, lunch, egg, fruits and protein bars), childcare and health care. Our intervention includes: Early Childhood Education: Every day children are at the Centre from 9am to 4:30pm and are taught Math, English, Kannada using the Montessori method. The Montessori method fosters an environment where children can learn at their own pace. Montessori materials such as number rods, movable alphabets, and sandpaper letters are integral to our approach. These tools help children understand mathematical concepts through hands-on activities, enhancing their fine motor skills and reasoning abilities. We also prepare children to enroll in primary school. Nutrition: Every day we provide lunch, milk, eggs, fruit, protein bars. Our nutrition provides a child with over 70% of his/her daily requirement. Health & Child Care: We provide Multi vitamin syrup to all children everyday. We conduct quarterly health camps and support children who need treatment. We also provide children with clothes, slippers, blankets and hygiene kits. Parents Engagement: Monthly visit, Quarterly Parent Teachers Meetings, Weekly videos to encourage parental involvement, develop a strong support system and reinforce the importance of education. After School Program: The After School Program was initiated in 2023 and runs across 15 centres covering over 240 children. Since September- 2023 our teachers have spent two hours every evening working with alumni children, and other school going community children, helping them with homework, and providing free education support. All children who come to the After School Program are also provided with fruits/ snacks.

Impact

Over 240 Alumni children attend the Diya Ghar After School Program and receive help from the Diya GHar teachers with their school work.

Programs

  • Early Childhood Care and Education for Children of Migrant Labourers

Witnessing the delight of the kids in school brings enormous joy! After just a few months in school, these kids have seen significant transformations. They are now stronger, taller, and in better health. Their capacity to collaborate and have fun with one another has increased. Their ability to communicate has improved. Their inventiveness has increased.

You won't be able to tell that the kids in our DIYA GHAR centre come from difficult social and economic backgrounds. Education truly is a leveller!

  • Community Model

Since the epidemic forced the closure of all schools, we had to switch to a community-based strategy for our in-school Montessori instruction. This required us to start filming video classes and provide every child with a learning kit that contained lap desks, seating mats, stationery, and other supplies. We produce parenting videos in addition to the instructional videos, explaining how parents may help their children learn the material. These parents are deeply engaged in their children's educational pursuits for the first time. Furthermore, under the direction of our teachers, we have selected and trained Community Champions who instruct our kids in these neighbourhoods. Both our kids and their parents are still learning and developing today.
