About

GENESIS : On the eve of the twenty-first century, in the year 2000, a group of very enthusiastic people initiated ONKAR Seva Sansthan at Read moreJamtara, a district of newly formed state in Jharkhand. They had in their heart, a zeal for making contribution to the society in the changing scenario. The entire district has undulated and hilly terrain with scattered patches of forest. It is a part of famous Chhottanagpur plateau and located at the eastern part of the state of Jharkhand, adjacent to West Bengal. The district is mostly dominated by a primitive tribal population – Santhals. This tribal population is in true sense, disadvantaged and marginalized in the society. Thus the founders of ONKAR , resolved to intervene in the process of development for this downtrodden section of the mankind especially those are the corner stone of the society, in the district of Jamtara, Deoghar, Dumka, and Dhanbad through a unified effort. It was the beginning of a long journey towards the developmental goal of ONKAR. Throughout our journey, we have been working to promote rights and entitlements of these under privileged communities which are our primary stakeholders. We have always promoted the child rights by providing primary education and also eliminating the child labour practices in the area. During our early days, we started programmes like 'Informal education to the tribal children' and focused on providing education to the children working in the neighboring areas and also at the Chittaranjan rail town. To some extent, we were able to convert these child labourers into students. Later, we imparted the bridge course for the Tribal children under the support of Jharkhand Govt. and with all our efforts we were able to motivate the parents of these children to send them to school instead of work. The parents also got sensitised about the education of their girl child and we do hope that gradually we are walking in our future steps to ensure the child rights in the area. THE VISION: A transformed civil society with social justice, gender equality and livelihood opportunities for the disadvantaged population. MISSION: To bring about a social change empowering the tribal population and other disadvantaged section of the rural population for creating a sustainable civil society.
