South Sundarban Janakalyan Sangha or SSJS is a nonprofit organization working for the poor and most marginalized people primarily in the Sundarban ar Read moreeas of South 24 Parganas. Founded in 1990 by a group of energetic and philanthropic enthusiasts, SSJS is a nonprofit civil society organization. Based in Raghunathpur village under Srinagar Panchayat of Kakdwip block, the organization works for the upliftment of rural people irrespective of caste, creed and race. SSJS also has two project offices; one at Rajnagar, Birbhum and the other at Maithon, Jharkhand. Since it beginning some 30 years back SSJS worked with a wide range of issues. Initially it focused on disaster relief and in due time the organization moved to more substantial and sustainable for of development involving rights and entitlements of the people. The vision of SSJS is sustainable development of people ensuring everyone - even the most deprived can progress towards achieving basic education, health programme and an adequate livelihood and training. Its mission is to enable the more disadvantaged to analyses and deal with their problems themselves. To enable them to gain access to integrated and comprehensive development. SSJS works with the people in a way that people do not just receive benefits rather they are empowered and capacitated to build and manage their own lives. SSJS works primarily in four areas of development; Health, Education, Social and Economic Upliftment and Empowerment of people, particularly women. The district of South 24 Parganas has a high number of people belonging to ST, SC and OBC. They are socially and economically deprived and belong to the lowest rung of the society. Moreover, due to the unique geographical setting of this district, access and movement within and outside the district is highly difficult. In the past two decades, SSJS has been working on water and sanitation, providing tube wells for drinking water in the rural communities, constructing low cost houses for people and individual household latrines for promoting health and hygiene and arresting open defecation. SSJS also runs creche and Balwadi centres for poor marginalized children whose parents go out for daily labour work. SSJS is affiliated or Awarded from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Credibility Alliance & Guidestar India.
