ALfA, Accelerating Learning for All, is DEVI Sansthan’s flagship foundational literacy and numeracy program designed to help children rapidly acquire basic reading, writing, comprehension, and arithmetic skills. The program supports students, especially in Grades 1 to 5, through a low-cost, classroom-ready, activity-based, and child-led paired learning methodology.

ALfA uses the MAT process: Model, Apply, and Transfer. Teachers first demonstrate a task with children, after which students practise in rotating pairs, create and answer questions, peer-check each other’s work, and continue learning independently. This approach improves participation, confidence, inclusion, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, creativity, and classroom ownership.

The program is implemented through government school systems with teacher training, Teaching-Learning Material distribution, baseline and endline assessments, regular monitoring, field support, and system-level mentoring. It is designed to work within existing school routines without creating a parallel delivery structure.

ALfA has been implemented across multiple states and districts in India and has also been piloted internationally. The program aims to address the foundational learning crisis by enabling visible learning gains within a short implementation cycle of around 45 working days. Through partnerships with governments, CSR partners, and philanthropic institutions, ALfA supports large-scale improvement in foundational learning outcomes and contributes to long-term system strengthening in public education.

The Ranchi ALfA (FLN) NIPUN Project is a focused foundational literacy and numeracy initiative by DEVI Sansthan for children in Grades 1–3 across 506 government primary schools in Ranchi, Jharkhand. The project will benefit 36,000+ children, train and certify around 1,500 teachers, and support schools through ALfA learning kits, baseline assessments, teacher capacity building, classroom implementation, monitoring, endline evaluation, and impact reporting.

This project is proposed through a Zero Coupon Zero Principal (ZCZP) public issue on the BSE Social Stock Exchange, with an issue size of ₹1.11 crore and a 12-month implementation period. DEVI Sansthan is the first NGO from Uttar Pradesh registered on the BSE Social Stock Exchange, and this initiative is positioned as the first standalone public issue on BSE SSE. The ZCZP structure is designed for transparent and regulated social giving, where contributors receive measurable social impact rather than financial return.

Impact

DEVI Sansthan has created measurable impact in Foundational Literacy and Numeracy by bringing fast, scalable, and child-centred learning solutions to underserved communities. Through its ALfA approach, the organisation has reached thousands of government schools and helped children build essential reading and numeracy skills through paired learning, peer practice, joyful materials, and structured classroom routines. The programme has reached 12,526+ schools, impacted 7,36,051 students, and trained 45,413 teachers, creating a strong foundation for sustainable classroom transformation. DEVI’s work has also mobilised over 500,000 student volunteers through community-led literacy campaigns, extending learning support beyond classrooms and into communities. DEVI Sansthan has also entered into state and district-level MoUs and partnerships to implement ALfA in government schools across Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Ranchi in Jharkhand, and Nandurbar in Maharashtra. These partnerships reflect the growing trust of government systems in ALfA as a scalable solution for improving FLN outcomes. DEVI’s impact is not limited to access alone. Its focus is on measurable learning outcomes, including improved FLN competency, stronger teacher adoption of active pedagogy, increased child confidence, and better classroom participation. By supporting government schools, CSR partners, NGOs, and district administrations, DEVI Sansthan is helping accelerate progress towards universal FLN and the goals of NIPUN Bharat.
