Since
2002
The NAB India Centre for Blind Women and Disability Studies envisioned a future where every blind girl in India could achieve financial independence, Read moreheightened self-worth, and happiness. In 2002, this dream materialized, and since then, the NAB India Centre has empowered numerous blind women across the country. Inspired by the research findings from a study on the 'Status of Blind Women in India' conducted by NAB and the Asian Blind Union, Ms. Anuradha Mohit Dalmia (Director, National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disability-NIEPID, Govt. of India) and Ms. Shalini Khanna (Founder-Director, NAB India, Centre for Blind Women & Disability Studies), National Association for the Blind-India, Mumbai, took the initiative to establish this center. The study revealed the profound vulnerabilities and the extent of deprivation experienced by blind women nationwide. Combining poverty with blindness led to these women being marginalized socially and within their families, requiring a unique rehabilitation approach. Thus, the NAB India Centre for Blind Women & Disability Studies was established to address these challenges. Mission: • To sustain the lives of the most marginalized women, creating a ripple effect within communities. • To rehabilitate helpless and unskilled blind women from rural and urban India, providing them with the skills to earn a livelihood and regain their dignity. Vision: • To eliminate blindness as a disability for women across the country, enabling and empowering them to dream and live those dreams. • To transform the status of blind women in India by offering rehabilitation, training, education, guidance, and dignity to thousands of visually impaired girls and women.

Counselling
The center places significant emphasis on the mental health of the girls, particularly those who have experienced late-onset blindness. It conducts counseling sessions for girls from rural and disadvantaged backgrounds, as well as for individuals grappling with emotional challenges and adapting to the loss of certain physical abilities.

Placement/ Post Placement Support
A crucial result of the training is the placement of women in their respective workplaces. The NAB Centre not only focuses on empowering women with professional skills but also ensures their placement in the specific field they have been trained for. Moreover, the center supports women after placement by offering guidance on mobility, orienting them to the office space, assisting with accommodation, and providing various other necessary support to help them settle into their work.

Talking hands
Talking Hands introduces a distinctive therapeutic healing approach utilizing the heightened tactile sensation of visually impaired individuals. Our vision is to elevate the status of skilled visually impaired individuals in India and Asian countries.
The center provides training to blind and visually impaired women in various therapeutic healing techniques, including oil massage therapy, dry massage therapy, foot reflexology, and more. Candidates are selected based on a three-day assessment of their basic motor skills, memory retention, and grooming. The chosen candidates undergo an intensive three-month training program. Following this training, the women are placed in beauty salons, corporate houses, or clinics.
The Talking Hands Clinic operates within the center, catering to walk-in clients dealing with muscular pain or similar disorders. -
Discovering hands
The NAB India Centre for Blind Women introduces "DISCOVERING HANDS" to India and Asia as part of the fight against breast cancer. This innovative program, developed by renowned German gynecologist Dr. Frank Hoffmann, aims to offer accessible breast screening for women under the age of 50 who are not covered by any preventive screenings.
Discovering Hands trains blind and visually impaired women in Tactile Breast Examination, empowering them to become Medical Tactile Examiners (MTEs). These MTEs use their special tactile abilities to screen breasts for any lumps or abnormalities. -
Mobility
One might assume that the loss of vision results in a loss of independence when it comes to walking, running, and dancing. However, at the center, women undergo rigorous mobility training to ensure they can walk down the streets, board the metro or public transport, and reach their destination independently.
-
Scholarship
The center awards scholarships, generously sponsored by donors, to visually impaired students who are in financial need and demonstrate merit, supporting their pursuit of higher education. NAB Centre has granted scholarships to its female students enrolled in esteemed institutions such as Delhi University, JNU, and TISS.
