Sahyog, an initiative of Chehak Trust, is working towards bringing about sustainable change in communities, particularly focusing on women and childre Read moren. We envision women and children, not as beneficiaries, but as agents of change. Our endeavor is to empower them to change their lives as well as the lives of the communities that they live in for better. Sahyog’s programmes have spanned non-formal education, education for children and adolescents with disabilities, enrichment of education for school-going children, life-skills for adolescent girls, and pre-professional training for young women. In 2010, Sahyog won the EdelGive Social Innovation Award for Education. Sahyog currently runs 3 educational programmes in Narayan Nagar community in Kurla-Ghatkopar (West): Sam, a scholarship-mentorship programme for adolescent girls; Roshan, a children’s library and enrichment programme; Sangharsh, a disability intervention programme. Two-thirds of Sahyog’s team are alumnae of the Sahyog’s Schools and women’s programmes and recruited from the communities in which it has worked.

Programs

  • Jhula Life Skills Programme

Jhula gives girls the opportunity to leave behind confined settings by fusing education with hands-on learning and social contact. It attempts to provide the girls with experiences, information, and abilities that they would not otherwise have.

Jhula was initially introduced at the Sahyog schools in Dindoshi and Jari Mari to supplement the academic instruction of the teenage ladies who had left the official school system.

Jhula has been introduced for girls enrolled in vocational training programmes provided by other organisations (such as Pratham's vocational training centres, Ambedkar Centre for Justice and Peace) in addition to in-school programmes. It has also been implemented as an after-school programme in the communities of Jari Mari, Mankhurd, Ghatkopar, Govandi, and Dindoshi.

  • Sahyog Sangharsh

By increasing awareness among various community stakeholders, offering education and rehabilitation to children with developmental disabilities, and granting access to mainstream special schools or vocational employment opportunities, Sahyog Sangharsh focuses on the early identification and intervention of children with disabilities. Children and teenagers with developmental disabilities, including hearing loss, intellectual disability, autism, cerebral palsy, and orthopaedic difficulties, are served by the community-based centre. It prepares children for integration into the formal education system or vocational centres by giving them access to basic education, extracurricular activities, and functional rehabilitation in a safe environment.
