Since
1966
Over 50 years ago, MPSM commenced its mission to identify and implement rural development strategies in and around Nashik District, starting 1964. The Read more diverse range of interventions spans from drilling drinking water wells to implementing watershed treatments, providing tutorial support for primary education, and establishing youth hostels for college students. Throughout its history, the organization has consistently prioritized rural and underprivileged communities, without any discrimination based on caste or creed. Its dedication lies in fostering rural and tribal awakening, known as "Prabodhan," through sustainable agroecology, social forestry, education, health initiatives, community organization, research and training, economic growth via livelihood programs, microfinance, and natural resource development. The origin of the organisation trace back to 1962 when numerous small and marginal farmers were abandoning their lands to seek sustenance in urban areas. The Jesuits from the Nashik Parish took initiative by organizing food-for-work and other relief programs to curb this migration. In addition to support from overseas benefactors, the Jesuits sought assistance from friends and well-wishers in Mumbai. A forward-thinking group recognized that while food-for-work provided temporary relief, ensuring water access for farmers in their fields would secure sustainable food sources. This vision led to the establishment of Maharashtra Prabodhan Seva Mandal (MPSM) on November 13, 1964. The inaugural Board Members of MPSM were Mr. Anthony Winin Pereira, Mr. Henry D’Costa, Mr. Ivan Rodrigues, and Ms. Ingrid Rodrigues. The administration and execution of projects and activities were entrusted to the Jesuits of the Bombay Province, with Fr. Joaquim Barranco, S.J., serving as the first Director. The mission is dedicated to promoting Asset-Based Integrated Rural Community Development through agroecological activities, education, microfinance, the revitalization, restoration, and promotion of tribal indigenous herbal health practices, human and natural resource development, women's advancement and leadership programs, tribal entrepreneurship, as well as research, training, and development.
