NAWA is a secular, charitable non-Governmental organization registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. It was founded in 1958 by Padmash Read moreri Dr. S. Narasimhan. He successfully combined compassion and dedication with the power to heal the sufferings of the forgotten and neglected tribal people of the Nilgiris and its surroundings. His work as a dedicated doctor helped to build up a bond of trust and faith not only among the tribal communities but also among the other local communities. With the help of government institutions and private well-wishers, various health, livelihood and education projects are undertaken for last 62 years. Currently NAWA is doing multiple projects with Ministry of Tribal affairs, Child Fund, Child line, ICDS, State Forest, health, education departments and etc. Over the years NAWA evolved itself to address the changing needs and priorities of tribal communities and has grown as a Proactive tribal development organization with a clearly spelt out Vision 2025.

Livelihood development
The primary on-farm programs have centered on leveraging the land resources owned by tribal members, with a focus on establishing horticulture plantations encompassing tea, coffee, spices, and fruit trees. Additionally, there's an emphasis on value-addition for both agricultural produce and minor forest products. Furthermore, promoting tribal herbal medicines has been a significant intervention aimed at improving the livelihoods of traditional herbal medical practitioners.
In pursuit of supplementary income avenues, the development of animal husbandry has been prioritized to bolster livelihoods.
Likewise, NAWA has directed efforts towards enhancing the traditional livelihood skills of tribal communities, including carpentry, blacksmithing, pottery, embroidery, painting, and others. These initiatives aim to equip the youth with skills for self-employment, fostering sustained economic development within their communities.

Education
NAWA and ChildFund India have cultivated a longstanding and dynamic partnership that traces its roots back to 1976. It was during this time that Dr. Narasimhan was approached by ChildFund to participate in their child sponsorship program aimed at tribal children. Initially hesitant, Dr. Narasimhan was eventually persuaded by ChildFund's commitment to combating poverty and ignorance. Consequently, he gladly accepted the offer of sponsoring 200 children.
The initial sponsorship of 200 children eventually grew to encompass 700 children by 1986, reflecting the expanding scope and impact of their collaboration.
