CHES, founded in 1994 with the primary objective of providing care for two AIDS orphans, has undergone significant growth and transformation over the Read moreyears. Initially focused solely on orphan care, CHES soon recognized the need for broader interventions to address the complex challenges faced by vulnerable populations, particularly children. As the organization expanded its scope, it identified various issues such as the lack of prevention programs for sex workers and the social marginalization of transgender individuals. In response to these challenges, CHES implemented innovative programs and interventions. For example, it developed educational initiatives to promote condom use among sex workers, utilizing creative methods like the "Loss and Gain Chart" to illustrate the benefits of safer practices. Additionally, CHES conducted public awareness campaigns, including street shows and HIV quizzes, to engage communities and raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. Recognizing the importance of community-based care, CHES pioneered initiatives such as home-based care for pediatric HIV patients, which later evolved into a successful and replicable model. This approach not only provided essential support for patients and their families but also empowered local communities to take ownership of healthcare delivery. Furthermore, CHES has been proactive in addressing broader social issues, such as disaster relief efforts during events like the 2015 Vardha cyclone, and supporting income generation programs for affected families. The organization has also been instrumental in advocating for policy changes and institutional reforms, such as its involvement in the Chennai Child Welfare Committee, which led to significant improvements in the care and treatment of children in institutional settings. Throughout its journey, CHES has remained committed to its vision of creating a society where every child is treated with dignity, equality, and justice. By focusing on child rights perspectives and collaborating with stakeholders at various levels, CHES continues to work towards its mission of protecting children from discrimination, exploitation, abuse, and neglect, while promoting their holistic development and empowerment.

Programs

  • Anandha Illam Program

In 1994, Dr. Manorama, a paediatric gastroenterologist at the Government Hospital for children in Chennai, founded the Community Health Education Society Ashram (CHES Ashram) after caring for two HIV-positive children who were abandoned even by medical professionals. Renamed Anandha Illam as it expanded, the home has since admitted 310 HIV-positive children, prioritizing those with no one to care for them. Through educational and vocational support, CHES has successfully reintegrated many children into society, with 41 pursuing professional courses and 18 opting for vocational training. Over 25 years, CHES has transformed the lives of these "Lesser Children Of God," providing them with family, education, healthcare, and the belief in a brighter future.

  • After Care Program

Since initiating its AIDS orphan care program in 1994, CHES has been instrumental in supporting HIV-positive children beyond childhood, navigating challenges posed by the Juvenile Justice Act's age limit of 18 years for children's homes. Collaborating with TANSACS, the Department of Social Defense and Welfare, CHES established an After Care program tailored to meet the educational and medical needs of transitioning young adults. As of 2014, CHES has seen 41 children graduate, including six engineers, one chartered accountant, and two BSc nursing graduates, all of whom have successfully secured employment. Through diligent support and counseling, CHES ensures the holistic well-being and continued connection of these individuals to the organization.

  • Breaking the Resilience – Building the Self Esteem Program

Originating in 2012 as a Micronutrient support initiative for AIDS orphans, this project swiftly evolved to address various gaps in orphan care, focusing on enhancing educational, health, and overall developmental outcomes. Emphasizing self-confidence and leadership skills, the project aims to empower children to become community leaders and bridge the services they miss while away from home. Through tailored interventions, including educational support, computer literacy, vocational training, and nutritional assistance, the project nurtures holistic development, identifies hidden talents, and instills a positive health approach and behavioral outlook among the 100 children served. Active engagement in children's clubs and diverse activities, such as field trips to post offices, further enriches their learning experiences and fosters confidence and trust in their abilities.

  • CHES Childline Collab Program

CHILDLINE, a nationwide 24-hour toll-free emergency outreach service for children in need of care and protection, is facilitated and implemented by CHILDLINE India Foundation under the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India. CHES CHILDLINE Chennai program, initiated in May 2015, operates within South Chennai, covering areas from Madhya Kailash to Sholinganallur (OMR and ECR belt), as well as Meenambakkam and Pallikaranai. Responding promptly to calls made to the toll-free number 1098, the CHES Childline team provides vital assistance to approximately 500 to 600 distressed children annually, offering interventions, medical care, shelter referrals, repatriation, sponsorship, psychological support, and awareness about 1098.
