VSSM, a non-profit organisation, works to empower nomadic and de-notified communities, aiming to foster an inclusive society and advocate for governme Read morent policies benefiting these marginalized groups. Founded in 2005, VSSM emerged from a search for Gujarat's Nomadic and De-Notified Tribes (NT-DNTs), driven by questions about their whereabouts and well-being. Recognizing their plight, VSSM registered formally in 2010, with a commitment to granting social identity and dignity to these communities, addressing their unvoiced challenges, and advocating for their rights to education, healthcare, housing, and livelihood support. Through grassroots initiatives and policy advocacy, VSSM seeks to challenge stereotypes and bring holistic change to NT-DNTs' lives. Its vision is for nomadic and de-notified tribes to achieve social identity and dignified living. VSSM's mission involves creating an empathetic social and political environment conducive to inclusive growth for these communities, while also designing community-based interventions to instigate progressive change from within.

Programs

  • Vallabh Vidya Vihar Programme

    District
    State

VSSM envisions creating a unique educational and cultural hub tailored for Gujarat’s nomadic and de-notified communities. It aims to provide a nurturing environment where children can access skill-based education, basic schooling, and immerse themselves in their cultural heritage through a dedicated museum showcasing their traditions. With generous support from Shri Chandrakant Gogri, who donated land for the campus, named "Vallabh Vidya Vihar" in honour of his father, VSSM is dedicated to developing infrastructure and pedagogy. The curriculum prioritizes preparing children for the future, integrating Gandhian principles, promoting experiential learning, and fostering behavioural, social, and professional skills. Additionally, vocational training and marketing skills are integrated, alongside agricultural and livestock education, to empower these communities for sustainable livelihoods.

  • Human Rights Programme

    District
    State

It tirelessly advocates for the rights of nomadic and de-notified communities, striving to secure essential documents like ration cards and birth certificates, enabling access to government schemes. Through extensive lobbying and awareness campaigns, it has influenced policy changes, including the recognition of these communities in censuses and the issuance of voter ID cards and residential plots. VSSM's efforts have led to the establishment of specific boards for their welfare, amendments to caste certificate application processes, and increased assistance for housing. Additionally, it has successfully pushed for the inclusion of community concerns in political party manifestos and the formation of a central government board dedicated to their development and welfare.

Milestones & Track Record

VSSM has established 30 field officers working to connect nomadic tribes with government schemes and identification documents, and has expanded its initiatives to include participatory water management, disaster relief, elderly assistance, and cultural preservation efforts.
