Since
1986
Thanal, established in 1986, initially focused on raising environmental awareness and fostering an environmentally conscious generation by conducting Read morestudies on natural history and integrating environmental education into educational institutions. However, its evolution into committed environmental activists stemmed from concerns about rising pesticide use, resulting in health issues, deforestation, and mismanagement of urban waste. The turning point came in the 1990s when over 50,000 villagers in the Kasargod district suffered from health complications attributed to the pesticide Endosulfan used in cashew plantations. Thanal, together with the local community, initiated a vigorous campaign in 1998, compelling the State Government to ban Endosulfan in 2011 after rigorous studies, national debates, petitions, and advocacy efforts. Today, Thanal is actively transforming farming practices through social enterprises like the Organic Bazaar and Agro-Ecology Centre, ensuring safe and nutritious food for consumers while improving farmers' lives. Moreover, its national movement, the Save Our Rice Campaign, promotes ecological farming and conserves traditional high-quality seed varieties across five states. Its initiatives also include the Zero Waste Campaign, which led to the establishment of the Zero Waste Centre at Kovalam, serving as a training hub for communities on waste management. Its ultimate vision revolves around prioritizing people, the planet, and sustainability while steering impactful campaigns and providing support for social entrepreneurs and young green leaders of the future.

This paradigm's profit-driven motives often overlook fair and equitable rights to natural resources, resulting in piecemeal land management that triggers environmental crises and societal conflicts. Thanal's initiative aims to raise awareness among the public and policymakers about land use practices that preserve ecosystems supporting millions of lives. Through policy advocacy, it played a significant role in formulating Wetland and Paddy land conservation policies in Kerala and is actively engaged in ongoing debates concerning the Western Ghats.
