The Forca Goa Foundation is a dedicated not-for-profit organization committed to transforming communities through the power of grassroots football. O Read moreur vision is to establish Indian football as a formidable presence on the global stage, inspiring a new generation of players and fans. Our mission is to build a comprehensive and inclusive grassroots football framework that transcends traditional boundaries, fostering talent, community engagement, and holistic development.
Issue
Children and young people in our community faces several critical issues that significantly impact their health and over all development. 1) One of the foremost problems is the lack of access to safe and organized sports activities. Many areas lack adequate facilities, such as playgrounds, sports fields, and recreational centers, which limits opportunities for children and adults to engage in healthy, physical activities. This absence not only hampers physical development but also affects social skills and community cohesion. 2) Lack of physical exercise. Due to the advent of technology, young people are increasingly spending their time indoors, engaging in screen-based activities rather than outdoor play or sports. 3) Malnutrition and obesity: Consequently, our community is grappling with rising rates of obesity and malnutrition. The lack of exercise, coupled with poor dietary habits, has led to an increase in obesity, particularly among children and adolescents. 4) Unequal playing fields for girls: There are very limited opportunities for girls to get involved in sports in India and in Goa. When we started the Baby league in 2019, we had 5 girls participating, last year the number grew to 296. It’s still a small percentage of the total 1500 participants, but we’re a work in progress. The lack of safe playing spaces, lack of toilet facilities, social biases, and few female coaches are just some of the challenges we are looking to overcome with this project.
Action
The Foundation conducts two main activities: 1. Little Gaurs league: an open format baby league where children from the age of 4 to 13 will get the opportunity to play football regularly in a safe environment. Besides the matches, there will also be workshops on nutrition, gender equality and waste management and responsible consumption for the participants. 2. Community training: Football based development activities in communities that need intervention. Through these two projects, over 2000 children will be directly impacted and over 4000 adults (parents, teachers, coaches, referees, volunteers), will have indirect impact. The baby league has over 300 girls participating, making it one of the country’s biggest leagues for young girls. Over the last 5 years, parents have consistently established that children who have participated in the league are healthier, make better dietary choices, have increased self-confidence and are more social. Through the community training initiatives, we have helped children and adults with different needs to engage in fun, physical activity, attain different development goals, and integrate with their communities.
