The Poona Blind School and Home for the Blind was founded to empower visually impaired individuals to aspire for a brighter future. For over eighty ye Read morears, it has been a leader in enriching the lives of visually impaired students through a well-rounded education. Its mission is to create meaningful change in the lives of these students by offering top-quality education. Forty years after its inception, a growing demand for admissions led to the establishment of a separate school for visually impaired girls. A vocational training centre was also introduced to promote self-reliance. Today, with two well-equipped campuses and a strong curriculum, both male and female students feel secure and confident in competing within mainstream society. The institution remains committed to its vision, continually striving to uplift and empower the visually impaired community through education.

Programs

Vocational Training Programme
Vocational training is also offered to visually impaired women. Boys are trained in chalk making, candle making, cane work, and more. Women receive training in rescanning, weaving, handloom production, knitting, simple sewing, and envelope making, among other skills. To enhance personal development, daily activities include lessons in daily living skills, home management, orientation, and domestic arts and crafts. These programs aim to equip trainees with essential skills for greater self-reliance and independence.

Teacher Training Centre
In 1990, the trust initiated a Teacher Training program, recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India, New Delhi. The demand for such a centre was significant, as no other facility in Maharashtra offered this service. This need prompted the establishment of a Teacher Training Centre in Pune to serve the state. To date, nearly 200 teachers have been successfully trained, contributing to the education and empowerment of visually impaired students across Maharashtra.
