Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College and General Hospital (LTMMC & GH), inaugurated on 24 April 1947, began as the "Indian Military Hospital" with Read more just fifty beds and a single outpatient unit. In 1950, it was renamed to honour Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak and has since grown into a 1,462-bed facility. Supported by 300 senior faculty members and 550 postgraduate students, it provides care to approximately 1.8 million outpatients and over 82,000 inpatients annually. Known for its strategic location, it established Asia's first trauma care centre in 1974 and continues to lead in trauma management. Its milestones include the first emergency cardiac stenting in 1977, Asia’s first Donor Human Milk Bank in 1989, and Maharashtra’s first cadaveric renal transplant in 1997. The Paediatric Department is recognised for its HIV Centre of Excellence and advanced Hematology-Oncology Ward offering affordable bone marrow transplants. All departments excel in care delivery, supported by modern labs and skilled paramedical staff, fostering a welcoming and collaborative environment.

Social Services Department
The Social Services Department, managed by Medical Social Workers, provides specialized cancer counselling, group therapy, rehabilitation, adoption guidance, and a school for the deaf. Charitable trusts contribute funds and peri-operative patient care regularly. The Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana offers health insurance benefits to patients below the poverty line. The Poor Box Charitable Fund allocated ₹4.3 crores from donations previously to subsidize imaging diagnostic services. Annually, Shraddha Charitable Trust distributes gift hampers and sweets to terminally and critically ill patients during festive occasions.

Established in 1967, the Staff & Research Society of Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital promotes research, raises awareness about its medical services, and ensures faculty stays updated on medical advancements. It conducts regular scientific meetings, annual events, and orations, including the Dr. V. N. Panse Oration, along with CME programmes. It also oversees ethics committees for human, animal, and stem cell research, managing meetings, records, and project documentation. Additionally, it organises annual competitive examinations, paper presentations, and dissertation competitions to encourage academic and professional excellence.
