The Villoo Poonawalla Memorial Hospital is a multispecialty facility located on the Pune-Solapur Highway in Hadapsar, Pune. Established by the Welfare Medical Foundation with support from Serum Institute of India, the hospital provides high-quality treatments at affordable rates, with a special focus on serving underprivileged individuals.

They provide free primary healthcare to rural communities through Mobile Medical Units. These units are considered the most effective and viable solution for delivering primary healthcare in rural India.

Serum Institute of India has regularly provided vaccines free of cost or at subsidized prices to various social welfare groups, educational organizations, and charitable trusts, benefiting communities both nationally and internationally. Millions of vaccine doses have been donated to countries like Uzbekistan, Laos, Nepal, and India, and offered at subsidized prices to the Philippines to support mass immunization campaigns against Measles and Rubella. During the H1N1 pandemic, millions of NASOVAC doses were donated to protect the underprivileged.

The Villoo Poonawalla Foundation and Serum Institute of India recognize education as a transformative tool for the underprivileged. To support this vision, they have established and funded several schools, including:

All schools under the foundation are English medium, believing that proficiency in English enhances career opportunities for students.

A pilot plant providing 2 million liters of drinking water daily has been set up in Pune, with plans to increase capacity to 10 million liters, ensuring clean water access for underserved communities.

Serum Institute of India has also supported various community initiatives, including road widening and asphalting, building public toilets and bridges, and developing gardens and playgrounds to enhance the quality of life for local residents.

In response to environmental concerns, Serum Institute has taken steps to reduce its carbon footprint by implementing 57.2 MW wind power projects. These initiatives utilize wind energy to generate electricity, displacing the need for conventional fossil fuels. Currently, nearly 85% of the institute’s energy requirements are met by wind power. Serum Institute has further demonstrated its commitment to environmental management by receiving a Certificate of Emission Reduction (CER).

Serum Institute has launched a green initiative for steam generation using bagasse briquettes, a clean and carbon-neutral alternative to fossil fuels like furnace oil and LDO. This project reduces greenhouse gas emissions and helps conserve natural resources. Additionally, the production of briquettes creates employment opportunities and provides extra income to farmers, benefiting the 70% of India’s population dependent on agriculture.

Serum Institute has improved water efficiency by recycling 60-65% of wastewater. Additionally, solar street lighting has been implemented as a clean, non-polluting energy source, independent of the utility grid.
