More than Play, an initiative of Khelo Tennis India Foundation, a registered Section 8 company, works towards creating equal opportunities for childre Read moren, youth, and mothers from vulnerable communities. Launched in 2003, More Than Play is a program aimed at impacting underprivileged, the urban slum children, youth, and mothers from the Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti, and other Mohalla's, in Delhi/NCR region. It seeks to individually bring holistic development to the child and lead to the community's overall development. The idea is to empower children, youth, and mothers with positive experiences to enable them to discover and develop through sport. More Than Play allows children and youth to find themselves and their role in the community; it empowers them to convert negative situations into positive learning. The program uses a unique S4D (Sports for Development) approach to improve access to opportunity within their environment and enable children and youth to make the most of their potential. This approach empowers individuals and unearths opportunities like never before. This is why More than Play is ‘Changing the game.’ Our vision is to create an equitable world where children and young people are educated, employable and able to reach their full potential while maintaining good mental and physical health. Our mission: 1. Play and Learn: Co-create sustainable and safe play cum learning spaces for children, youth and the community from mixed socio-economic backgrounds. 2. Long-term focus: Use sport and play as a tool for long-term engagement. 3. Life skills: Use mentoring to empower young people across socio-economic and religious groups with critical life skills. Alignment with SDG Goals: Goal 3 - Health and Well-Being Goal 4 - Quality Education Goal 5 - Gender Equality Goal 17 - Partnership for the Goals
Issue
Background: In the Urban Slums of Nizamuddin Basti and other areas around, in Delhi, there is lack of essential resources, education and opportunities. Nizamuddin Basti is a small area of 0.17 square kilometers, which has several historical structures like the 14th Century Dargah, of Sufi Saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya. The area attracts millions of tourists. The community here is mainly made up of marginalized Muslims and immigrants who are facing economic challenges. After the conclusion of the 14 year project by Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), from 2007 to 2021, which primarily focused on conserving historical structures and promoting socio-economic development, the socio-economic progress of Nizamuddin Basti came to a halt due to the Covid pandemic. The most effected were the children in this community. The school closures and limited access to online education, severely hampered their learning levels. The children did not have opportunity to play as the parks created by AKDN became garbage dumping areas. The Nizamuddin Basti had only one Primary School (Nursery to 5th Grade), operated by Municipality Corporation of Delhi. The school has a small, cemented area, approximately 20 ft wide and 40 ft long. This space is a multipurpose area for events. The school does not have a physical education teacher and no sports activities. Other NGOs like Chintan and The Hope Foundation operate in the Basti. They work on Education interventions. No initiative has been launched historically to address the children's mental and physical well-being. Gully cricket is popular amongst the boys. There is no sport or play for the girls and women.
