Nila is an innovative non-profit organisation working at the crossroads of craft, design, sustainability, and community development. Engaging with eve Read morery stage of India's craft value chain, it adopts a thoughtful, forward-thinking, and sensitive approach to addressing key challenges in the industry, ensuring its preservation and adaptation in a changing global landscape. A comprehensive study of the craft ecosystem, identified major concerns such as limited exposure and resources for artisans, the decline of sustainable practices in favour of harmful alternatives, and inadequate waste management systems. At the same time, it acknowledged grassroots initiatives, skilled artisans safeguarding traditional craftsmanship, and indigenous knowledge as vital tools for sustainable progress. Established under the aegis of the Lady Bamford Foundation, Nila extends its commitment to cultural sustainability by promoting traditional craftsmanship as a means of economic and social empowerment. In 2019, Nila House was launched in Jaipur as a dedicated centre for honouring and reviving India's craft heritage, with further expansion planned to strengthen its impact.

  • Nila House

    Nila House opened in October 2019 as a vibrant centre for cultural exchange, featuring open studios, collection showrooms, an archive and research library, an exhibition gallery, a textile vault, and artists-in-residence spaces. Originally built as a family home in the 1940s, it was carefully restored over nearly two years. The structure showcases local, natural materials, including araish lime plaster, jute furnishings, and handmade paper railings, preserving traditional craftsmanship and sustainability.
