Programs

  • Water and sanitation

SIDUR recognized the vital role of enhanced hygiene and sanitation in preventing water-borne diseases. To promote behavioural changes necessary for improved hygiene and sanitation, SIDUR engaged local leaders and women's groups in the slums.
Women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) were recruited as volunteers or change agents and received training to raise awareness about hygiene-related issues and encourage safe drinking water consumption in their communities.
These SIDUR change agents conducted door-to-door visits, offering demonstrations and promoting proper hygiene and sanitation practices. As members of the project community, they possessed a deep understanding of local health concerns and established trust within the community.
Educational materials and posters, tailored for low-literacy populations with input from the volunteers, connected simple hygienic behaviours to clean water and food.

  • Rehabilitation for the differently abled

This initiative extends to a diverse network that includes individuals with disabilities, families of those individuals, local communities, Disabled People's Organizations, various levels of government, international entities, non-governmental organizations, healthcare professionals, and the private sector. Our educational efforts also extend to raising awareness within communities about the rights of people with disabilities and advocating for their rights. The organisation actively screens communities for impairments, engage in HIV/AIDS prevention, provide counselling to peers, families, and teachers, offer sanitation and health education, collaborate with fellow NGOs, facilitate skill development and job placements, promote income generation, and create employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

  • Slum development

SIDUR has been operating its Integrated Slum Development programs in Hyderabad's urban slums since its inception in 1990. These programs have evolved from theoretical frameworks into actionable initiatives based on personal experiences and a deep understanding of slum residents' lives. Recognizing the concerning trend of slum residents internalizing negative attitudes that eroded their self-esteem and confidence, SIDUR took on an activist's role to address this issue.
The concept of Integrated Slum Development (ISO) was formulated with the belief that slum residents themselves could be active participants in their own development. In early 1993, preliminary education and health initiatives were initiated, allowing SIDUR to understand the needs of slum residents, refine the programs, and design effective learning and monitoring systems.
The implementation of ISO commenced with four key programs: Community Health, Non-Formal Education, Skill Development, and Community Organization.
