The Rural Futures programme at WELL Labs works to transform rural livelihoods by improving farm incomes while restoring land and water systems. It operates across canal-irrigated and rainfed regions, addressing challenges like unequal water access, land degradation, and low productivity.

In Raichur, as part of our Transformation Labs initiative, we are building last-mile irrigation infrastructure, strengthening community institutions and water user groups, and enabling participatory water planning. The programme also promotes crop diversification, supports access to sustainable agricultural inputs, and develops market linkages for farmers. Additionally, it addresses labour challenges through mechanisation and local enterprises, while using research, data, and partnerships to design scalable, community-driven solutions.

The Technical Consulting offering enables better decision-making for capital intensive water interventions by providing rigorous data, models, and evidence-based approaches.

It develops practical tools like the WISER framework to accurately assess water security outcomes and provides advisory services to government agencies, foundations and CSRs on large-scale water systems management.

WELL Labs’ Urban Water programme focuses on building water-secure and climate-resilient cities through water circularity and nature-based solutions. It works with governments and stakeholders to design data-driven tools, such as water balance frameworks and diagnostic models, to guide urban water planning.

Some of the areas of implementation areas include promoting wastewater reuse, evaluating decentralised sanitation systems, and developing reuse pathways for treated water. The programme also advances scientific lake rejuvenation, integrates nature-based solutions into urban infrastructure, and restores degraded water bodies. Additionally, it fosters community engagement in water conservation and conducts research to address policy, financing, and implementation barriers in urban water management.

WELL Labs’ Products, Platforms and Partnerships programme builds open-source tools, datasets, and collaborative platforms to improve outcomes in the water and social-impact sectors. At its core is the Green Rural Economy (GRE) platform, which connects organisations to share solutions and scale impact.

The programme facilitates collaborations between partners, develops practical playbooks to codify grassroots knowledge, and runs “Clinics” to solve real-world challenges. It also builds solution directories and uses digital tools to improve access and discoverability.
