Originally established to restore peace and harmony in politically and religiously disturbed areas of Assam, the Ashram is now functioning with the pr Read moreimary cause of spreading literacy among the backward areas, particularly in the rural regions of Assam. The Ashram presently operates through 8 branches in the state and runs 8 schools for children belonging to poor and underprivileged communities. Classes are offered in the pre-primary, primary and upper primary sections. Other key areas where training is undertaken and organized by the Ashram are Yoga and Natural Treatment, Teacher Skill Development, Bee Keeping, Cutting & Knitting for producing Khadi and traditional Assam silk sarees, Food Production & Processing and Weaving. The Ashram also runs a small unit of traditional medicine system with the aim of conserving and preserving the ancient practice based on use of medicinal plants, herbs and other inorganic materials. Restoring and maintaining peace in areas facing religious/political instability is another object of the Ashram and it has previously led the peace initiative at tormented Bodoland, helping in restoring peace in the area. The Ashram also undertakes relief work during natural calamities and organizes regular blood donation drives. For their initiatives in spreading literacy, they have received the National Award on Literacy in 1997.
