    1994

Rasta is a non-profit organization registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, with registration number S/26397, dated 25th July 1994. The Read moreorganization is dedicated to promoting education, skill development, women empowerment, and community health among the most disadvantaged populations. Currently, Rasta’s services extend to over 150,000 households across more than 78 locations within the National Capital Region (NCR) of Delhi, with a particular focus on East Delhi, Haryana, Ghaziabad, Noida, and other nearby areas as deemed appropriate. Additionally, the organization has a program presence in NCR, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana.

Issue

One of the primary challenges Rasta encountered was limited financial resources. Sustaining and scaling programs across multiple locations required consistent funding, which proved difficult due to reliance on grants and donations. In addition, the organization faced several other significant concerns, including community resistance, inadequate infrastructure, high dropout rates, shortage of skilled personnel, gender-based barriers, and health and safety risks for field staff. A particularly critical issue has been the sustainability of programs. Ensuring the continued effectiveness and impact of initiatives after the completion of initial funding or withdrawal of donor support remains a persistent challenge, as is the case for many non-profit organizations.

Action

To effectively establish and implement its programs, Rasta began with comprehensive needs assessments through baseline surveys and community consultations to identify critical challenges in the area of education, health, skill development, and women empowerment. Based on these findings, the organization designed targeted interventions, including non-formal education, vocational training, Mahila Panchayats and health awareness campaigns. Community engagement was prioritized by involving field workers, volunteers, and beneficiaries to ensure participation, ownership, and cultural relevance. Rasta also formed strategic partnerships with government agencies, local authorities, donors, and NGOs to enhance program delivery and access necessary resources. Significant emphasis was placed on capacity building through regular training of staff and community workers. Guided by impact assessments and resource availability, Rasta gradually expanded its services to over 78 locations across the National Capital Region, including East Delhi, Ghaziabad, Noida, and parts of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. To ensure accountability and continuous improvement, the organization implemented robust monitoring and evaluation systems to track program outcomes and measure impact.

Impact

Since its inception in 1994, Rasta has directly impacted over 5,00,000 and indirectly reached more than 15,00,000 beneficiaries through community-based projects across Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. With support from 42 partners and a dedicated team, Rasta provides education through various centres and has developed custom learning materials for Grades 3 and 4. It has trained 500 teachers and conducted research studies for national and international agencies. In health, Rasta offers preventive, promotive, and curative services, including HIV/AIDS interventions, adolescent and women’s health sessions, and awareness programs focused on maternal and child health.

Programs

  • Education

Education is widely recognized as a cornerstone for the development and well-being of any society. In alignment with this belief, Rasta implements a range of educational programs tailored to the needs of underserved children and youth.

These include Preschool education for children aged 3–6 years, Non-Formal Education for those aged 6–14 years, Remedial Education to support students within the same age group, and a Bridge Course designed for adolescents aged 14–18 years who have previously dropped out of school. These initiatives aim to ensure access to inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all.

  • Community Health

Preventive, promotive, and curative community health is another key programmatic focus of Rasta. The organization actively engages with underserved communities by organizing regular health camps and outreach activities. These initiatives include growth monitoring of children, provision of nutritional guidance, and distribution of balanced and age-appropriate diets to promote early childhood development. Through these efforts, Rasta aims to improve overall community health and reduce health disparities among marginalized populations.
