    1995

Since 1995, Suniye is dedicated to the rehabilitation of hearing-impaired children. The initiatives have positively impacted over 1,000 hearing-impair Read moreed children to date. As one of the few NGOs in India focused on teaching spoken language to hearing-impaired children, the organisation firmly believes in their potential to learn and communicate, thereby providing them with equal opportunities. In line with this belief, Suniye operates a support school where a dedicated team of speech therapists provides speech and language training to young hearing-impaired children. Each year, Suniye caters to an average of 60+ students, with 90% hailing from low-income backgrounds. The goal is for these children to integrate into mainstream schools and evolve into productive members of society. An exceptional aspect of hearing loss or deafness is its 'invisible' nature, unlike other disabilities that are observable. Hearing impairment becomes evident only during interpersonal interactions when one person is unable to communicate with another, deviating from the natural interaction between two hearing individuals. Essentially, hearing impairment denotes the inability of a child or individual to perceive sounds. This condition may be congenital (present at birth), pre-lingual (occurring before the development of speech and language), or post-lingual (occurring after the acquisition of speech and language). Congenital hearing loss may result from factors such as the use of toxic drugs, diseases like jaundice or German measles, premature birth, heredity, or maternal illness during pregnancy, among other potential causes. Post-lingual hearing loss may be attributed to accidents, illnesses, old age, drug consumption, and similar factors.

Gradual hearing loss, known as presbycusis, occurs over time due to prolonged exposure to loud noises or excessive earwax, often associated with the aging process. In many cases, hearing loss is irreversible. Audiologists utilize audiometry, a straightforward and non-invasive procedure, to identify hearing loss in both adults and children. Suniye's audiologists conduct audiometry tests that assess speech discrimination ability, the mechanical audio transmission (function of the middle ear), and neural audio transmission (function of the cochlea) to assist students in understanding their hearing capabilities.
