The National Youth Service Action and Social Development Research Institute (NYSASDRI) is a non-profit based in Odisha, India. It's dedicated to estab Read morelishing a just and equitable society where vulnerable individuals can access resources for an improved life quality. NYSASDRI operates in challenging, remote regions of Central Odisha, mainly inhabited by tribal communities, with about 80% of households living below the poverty line. Its outreach benefits over 5.2 million disadvantaged individuals, spanning women, children, small-scale farmers, rural artisans, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and the destitute. Its vision is to empower underprivileged individuals to lead dignified lives with control over reproductive resources. The mission involves nurturing the potential of impoverished children, youth, men, and women to address social inequalities. It employs community-centred strategies, including public education, development counselling, public health advocacy, skill development, networking, research, and policy advocacy. Operating in 12 of Odisha's districts, it combines direct service delivery with research, advocacy, and networking across various domains like socioeconomic development, healthcare, and human rights.

Livelihoods Support Programme
Recognizing the scarcity of technical eye care personnel, NYSASDRI initiated a one-year Vision Technician training course, affiliated with the Indian Health Sector Skill Council. German BMZ support facilitated the training of 40 students from various parts of Odisha in the first year. Kalinga Eye Hospital, committed to improving eye care in Odisha, also established affiliations with the National Council of Vocational and Research Training for five vocational programmes, including opticians, operation theatre technology, nursing assistants, ophthalmic assistants, and clinical optometry courses. Furthermore, the hospital achieved empanelment with the Ministry of Defence for cashless treatment of ex-servicemen and their dependents under the ECHS scheme, expanding its services to multiple regions.

Education Programme
NYSASDRI established an educational complex in Hukumtola village, Odisha, in 1996-97 for tribal girls aged 6-14 (class I to V). It follows the Government of Odisha's curriculum, providing essential items, healthcare, and cultural programmes. The school now serves 120 tribal girls.
The British Public School (formerly ODMCS), founded in 2010 in Dhenkanal, focuses on quality education in rural tribal areas, offering CBSE curriculum, extracurricular activities, and recognition for top students.
NYSASDRI School of Journalism & Social Work (NSJS), established in 2013, offers post-graduate programmes in Journalism & Mass Communication and Social Work, preparing professionals for NGOs, healthcare, media, and societal transformation. -
Healthcare Programmes
Kalinga Eye Hospital, part of NYSASDRI, administered COVID vaccines to 433 individuals aged 60+ in the Dhenkanal district in March 2021. NYSASDRI operates a COVID Care Centre on its Govindpur campus, providing immediate services to patients regardless of age. Kalinga Eye Hospital (KEH) leads comprehensive eye care efforts, offering free and paid services. KEH conducts outreach camps, screens schoolchildren, and provides affordable care, including cataract surgery. Six vision centres in Angul and Dhenkanal districts offer primary eye care. The "Community Empowerment & Advocacy for Sustainable Health Care for People in Extreme Need in Odisha" (CEASH) project, running since 2004, empowers impoverished communities, strengthens PRIs, enhances healthcare accessibility, and advocates for reform across 19 Gram Panchayats in Dhenkanal and Jajpur districts, impacting around 100,000 people.

Rehabilitation Programmes
It operates a Short Stay Home since October 1, 1996, now merged with Swadhar Greh, offering temporary shelter to distressed women and girls. Swadhar Greh houses up to 30 women and 7 children, providing shelter, vocational training, counselling, legal aid, and education. Deemed Orphan supports orphaned, abandoned, and surrendered children at Swadhar Greh, ensuring education, recreation, healthcare, and special occasions. The Family Counselling Centre offers crisis intervention, family counselling, and support for victims of atrocities. Self-help programs assist 100 differently-abled individuals and families, fostering income-generation activities. During the COVID-19 pandemic, NYSASDRI distributed essential supplies, sensitized the community, provided PPE kits, and offered emergency ophthalmic services.

Environmental Programmes
NYSASDRI collaborates with the Odisha Forestry Sector Development Society (OFSDS) to execute the "Odisha Forestry Sector Development Project- BANAYAN" across six field management units (FMUs) in the Dhenkanal district. Launched in December 2017, the project focuses on restoring degraded forests and enhancing the livelihoods of forest-dependent communities. It engages in forest development efforts, including soil and moisture conservation, awareness campaigns, and income-generating activities. Additionally, NYSASDRI participated in the Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP) in the Dhenkanal district, contributing to community mobilization and awareness initiatives before modifications were made at the national policy level in 2015-16.

Natural Resources Management Programme
NYSASDRI promotes eco-friendly programmes, enabling disadvantaged families in income-generating activities through micro-credit, sustainable agriculture, and resourceful utilization. It creatively transforms barren lands into productive spaces like a nursery and agricultural area in Santhasara. Village education initiatives raise awareness about environmental stewardship, including workshops on solid waste management and climate change prevention. Sustainable agricultural models and vermicompost pits are installed in villages. NYSASDRI explores silviculture for soil-less cultivation. It emphasizes local empowerment, and sustainability, as seen in its food security programme in Gondia Block, introducing water management, irrigation, and self-help groups for development.
