The CHETANA is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) situated in the Dhenkanal district of Odisha, India. It focuses on addressing the crucial needs o Read moref disadvantaged groups, including senior citizens, women, youths, children, wage labourers, small farmers, scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, and others. Since its establishment, The CHETANA has remained dedicated to promoting social justice and enhancing the well-being of marginalized sections of society. It operates in the most remote and underserved regions of Central Odisha, where tribal communities predominate, and a large majority of the population lives below the poverty line. The CHETANA's development initiatives benefit over 5.2 million underprivileged individuals, encompassing women, children, small-scale farmers, rural artisans, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and the destitute. With a team of more than 40 highly skilled professionals, The CHETANA runs various programmes that include elderly care, support for people with disabilities, childcare, assistance for those affected by HIV/AIDS, malaria prevention, local agricultural development, village infrastructure improvement, and the promotion of human rights. Its primary approach in all interventions is participatory, ensuring that the community plays an active role in owning and managing the outcomes of the organisation's efforts.

Rural Sports Programme
The CHETANA actively engages in Rural Sports as part of its ongoing programmes. Through collaboration with local youth clubs, the organisation recently hosted a Volleyball Tournament at Bainsia Playground with the participation of six teams. Additionally, The CHETANA supports sports in the community by providing sports equipment for both indoor and outdoor games to the Ballav Youth Club, promoting active and healthy lifestyles among local youth.

Mobile Medical Unit for Senior Citizens
The Chetana operates a "Mobile Medicare Unit for Older Persons," a vital initiative addressing the healthcare needs of senior citizens in remote regions. Since 2015-16, this mobile health unit has been active in Gondia & Bhuban blocks of Dhenkanal district, with support from the Social Security & Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Department, Govt. of Odisha. The unit travels to isolated areas, conducting health assessments for older individuals, raising awareness among family members about elder care, and providing free medications to those in need. With a well-equipped Medical Van, a part-time doctor, and a staff nurse, the organisation offers regular health check-ups and immediate care services to older persons at various locations. In 2022-23 alone, it reached 38 locations, benefiting 3722 older individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Mobile Dispensary for Tribal Communities
In response to the healthcare needs of ST (Scheduled Tribe) communities residing in vulnerable and underserved areas of Dhenkanal, The Chetana launched a "Mobile Dispensary Unit." This unit, operating in Sadar, Gondia, Bhuban, Kamakhyanagar, and Kankadahad blocks, utilizes a Medical Van staffed with a part-time doctor and a nurse cum pharmacist. Its mission is to bring essential healthcare services directly to the doorstep of ST communities in regions where institutional care from the Government remains inaccessible.

Old Age Home Programme
The Chetana established a Senior Citizen Home, formerly known as "The Old Age Home," in Hemsarpada, Angul district, starting from January 1, 2020. This home caters to 16 economically disadvantaged older individuals who were neglected and abandoned by their families. It offers them a place to stay, free meals, recreational activities, and healthcare support. Throughout 2022-23, the residents enjoyed complimentary boarding, lodging, clothing, and access to recreational facilities. Additionally, a part-time doctor and nurse conduct weekly health check-ups and provide medical care to ensure their well-being.

Old Age Home for Elderly Women
The CHETANA operates "Senior Citizens' Homes for Elderly Women" in Chudakhiakateni, Dhenkanal district, offering essential support to 50 elderly women from various parts of the district. This programme, backed by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India since 2010, provides free accommodation, meals, clothing, shelter, vocational training, healthcare, counselling, and recreational activities. To ensure effective services, the organisation has appointed a counsellor, a part-time doctor, and a centre superintendent. The programme's progress is closely monitored by local authorities and representatives from the Government of India, ensuring its smooth operation and benefit to elderly women.
