The Indian Association for the Blind (IAB) was established in 1985 by its founder late S.M.A. Jinnah, who himself had lost vision due to an accident e Read morearly in life. It had a small start tutoring eight visually challenged students with residential facilities. It has now grown as an institution providing education, skill training, residential services, support services and employment to visually challenged people from low-income communities and rural regions. For its services towards specially abled people, the association has received many awards such as Millenium Award, CSR Award, IBN7 Super Idol Award, National Award for Best Institution, Award for Eminence and the National Award for Best Role Model.

Through more than 24 initiatives, the Indian Association for the Blind has educated and trained more than 30,000 visually challenged people which forms 20% of visually challenged people in the State of Tamil Nadu,

IAB affirms its commitment to empower visually challenged people become self-reliant by providing comprehensive rehabilitation, education and employment opportunities. IAB has a special focus on the socio economically disadvantaged visually challenged children and adults, particularly those from rural areas.

Programs

  • Education Programmes

    IAB provides education to visually impaired students through its special higher secondary school and integrated education programme enabling under and post-graduate education. It has a well-stocked audio and Braille library to help students access information easily.

    It also provides scholarships to visually challenged students who perform well in their academics. Its curriculum includes extra-curricular activities to enable all-round development of students.

  • Employment Programmes

    IAB graduates are finding fruitful employment in the BPO sector and also the Government sectors, more so, after the enactment of the Persons with Disability Act, 1995, which directs that one percent of jobs be reserved for persons with disabilities. This has enabled blind people to find employment with railways, schools and banks.

    IAB also provides vocational training for visually challenged people who want to start their own enterprises and partners with the private sector to identify opportunities and place visually impaired people in appropriate positions.

  • Residential Services Programmes

    The association takes care of accommodation and food for the students through its sixty thousand square feet, three-acre campus equipped with all facilities. The campus is home to three hundred visually challenged children who stay in comfort and learn essential academic and vocational skills. The association also provides for healthcare services to treat any medical problems of the inmates.

  • Career and Skill Training Programmes

    To enable the visually challenged students to prosper with good careers, the association imparts training in computers, BPO skills, printing and bookbinding, enabling them to take part in competitive exams and also basic engineering courses designed to assist the visually impaired non-graduate students to operate machines and earn their livelihoods.

  • Support Services Programmes

    The association has an in-house Braille books production house to print and make available books in Braille to its students. This production house now caters to visually impaired people all over the State of Tamil Nadu.

    Its audiobooks are also helping visually challenged people to read books by hearing them. It imparts life skills to its students to help them live independently in addition to teaching them how to use phones, computers and talking books with special adaptations. It also provides legal help and entitlements to people with disabilities if so required.

Milestones & Track Record

We are providing special high standard education to visually challenged children of rural background at free of cost. Still many parents are not aware on importance of education. Its little hardship to counsel them and bring their childrens to school.
